A Turkish club’s victory in European competition also contributes to Türkiye’s continental standing. However, a club’s points, its association’s coefficient and its domestic league position are three different calculations.
This guide explains how the points work, the distinction between a single-season ranking and a cumulative coefficient, and what they mean for Turkish clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
Reference: UEFA’s regulations for 2026–2027. All worked examples below are hypothetical illustrations, not the actual results of Turkish clubs.

| Measure | What does it tell you? |
|---|---|
| Türkiye’s single-season association coefficient | The average points earned by its clubs in European competition during that season. |
| Türkiye’s five-season association coefficient | The sum of five season coefficients, forming the association ranking used for the European access list. |
| A club’s five-season coefficient | The club’s European coefficient under UEFA’s rules, used for draw seeding as specified by each competition. |
| The Turkish league table | Domestic positions determine which clubs take the qualifying places, alongside the Turkish Cup route and participation rules. |
A club’s coefficient can therefore increase by a different amount from Türkiye’s association coefficient. Winning a domestic league match adds no points directly to the European coefficient.
The general calculation is:
Association season coefficient = total European points earned by its clubs ÷ number of its participating clubs that season.
The total includes match-result points and the applicable bonuses across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
Match-result points before division:
| Stage | Win | Draw |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying rounds and the play-offs before the league phase | 1 | 0.5 |
| League phase onwards | 2 | 1 |
A defeat earns no match-result points. These figures concern the association coefficient; they must not all be transferred automatically to an individual club’s coefficient calculation.
Take care with terminology: The qualifying play-offs before the league phase differ from the knockout phase play-offs held afterwards.
Suppose an association starts the European season with five clubs. In one league-phase matchweek, those clubs record:
| Results | Points before division |
|---|---|
| Two wins | 4 |
| One draw | 1 |
| Two defeats | 0 |
| Total | 5 |
Those results add the following to the association’s season coefficient:
5 ÷ 5 = 1.000 point.
In the same example, one win contributes 0.400 and one draw 0.200, before any applicable bonuses.
What if two clubs have been eliminated?
The divisor remains five; elimination does not reduce it to three. This is why keeping more clubs in contention can help an association continue accumulating points.
A ranking that changes during the season does not immediately change that season’s list of participants. First establish which reference period UEFA uses for the purpose concerned.
| Use in 2026–2027 | Reference period |
|---|---|
| Association ranking for the competition access list | 2020–2021 to 2024–2025 inclusive. |
| Five-season club coefficient | 2021–2022 to 2025–2026 inclusive. |
This difference explains why Türkiye’s current position may not correspond directly to its number of places or its clubs’ entry rounds in the same season.
When a report says Türkiye’s European allocation has improved, check which season’s access list it concerns and whether the place provides direct entry or a route through qualifying.

Alongside match results, UEFA awards bonuses for a club’s final league-phase position and for reaching specified knockout rounds.
Examples of bonuses for the final league-phase position:
| Position | Champions League | Europa League | Conference League |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 12.000 | 6.000 | 4.000 |
| 8th | 10.250 | 4.250 | 2.250 |
| 24th | 6.250 | 0.250 | 0.125 |
| 25th to 36th | 6.000 | 0.000 | 0.000 |
Bonus for reaching each of the following rounds: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final:
| Competition | Bonus for each round reached |
|---|---|
| Champions League | 1.5 points |
| Europa League | 1 point |
| Conference League | 0.5 points |
These bonuses also count towards the association total before it is divided by the number of clubs. The Champions League’s minimum six league-position bonus points are already included in the first table: do not add six again on top of its figures.
A club receives the higher of:
- The sum of its own season coefficients over the five-season reference period.
- 20% of its association’s five-season coefficient for that same period.
The 20% figure acts as an alternative minimum where needed. It is not an amount always added to the club’s own total.
Hypothetical example: If the association coefficient is 50.000, then 20% of it is 10.000.
| Club’s own five-season total | Coefficient used |
|---|---|
| 8.000 | 10.000 |
| 18.000 | 18.000 |
The rules for qualifying points and guaranteed minimums also differ between club and association calculations. One distinction is that results in the knockout phase play-offs earn no match-result points for a club’s coefficient, but do count towards its association’s coefficient.
For the association: Turkish clubs’ contributions go into a shared total, whichever of the three competitions they play in.
For an individual club: Building a European record over several seasons helps its coefficient for draw seeding, under the rules of the competition concerned.
For European places: The association ranking affects the access list, including the number of places and the entry routes allocated to that association.
UEFA’s distribution of direct league-phase places for the 2026–2027 Champions League included one for Türkiye. That figure concerns direct entry to the league phase of that competition; it is not Türkiye’s total allocation across all three European competitions.
The Conference League trophy — archive photograph taken in 2022.
A league-phase win earns two match-result points towards the association total in each of the three competitions, and a draw earns one.
Bonuses for league position and progress differ between competitions, but Conference League results still contribute to Türkiye’s coefficient. A strong run can therefore make a meaningful contribution, especially if a club keeps picking up results and reaches the later rounds.
To assess a European matchweek for Turkish clubs, add up every representative’s results, include the applicable bonuses, then divide by the number of participating clubs. Following just one team does not reveal the whole picture.
There is a separate route known as European Performance Spots.
The two associations with the highest single-season coefficients each receive one extra direct place in the following season’s Champions League league phase, under the applicable rules.
The place goes to the highest-placed club in the domestic league that has not already qualified for the Champions League league phase.
The key distinction: This comparison concerns one season’s performance; the usual cumulative association ranking covers five seasons.
An improvement in Türkiye’s five-season ranking alone therefore does not guarantee an extra European Performance Spot. You need to look at the relevant single-season performance ranking.
Do Türkiye’s national-team results add points here?
No. This system concerns clubs in UEFA competitions and is separate from national-team rankings.
Does winning by three goals earn more points than winning by one?
Not in match-result points: the basic value of a win is the same.
Does a penalty shoot-out victory count as an additional win?
Shoot-outs do not change the match-result points used for the coefficient. A bonus for reaching the next round may still apply, where provided for.
Does elimination reduce the number of clubs used as the divisor?
No. Eliminating a club does not remove its participation from that season’s calculation.
How should I read a coefficient table?
Check its year, whether it covers one season or five, the original number of participating clubs and the date of its last update. Then consult the access list for the season whose European places you want to understand.
