Driving in a new country takes more than memorising a speed limit or downloading a map. You need the right documents, an understanding of the road and vehicle category, and a plan for parking, stops and the return journey. This guide covers practical preparations before collection, your first day behind the wheel and journeys between cities, while distinguishing legal requirements from the rental contract.
Saudi driving licences: which rule applies to a foreign visitor?
A Saudi national entering Türkiye as a foreign citizen is subject to the rule for foreign nationals, rather than the rule for Turkish citizens. NVI confirms a six-month period for driving on a licence issued abroad; the Turkish Foreign Ministry explains that a foreign national's period runs from entry into the country. To continue beyond that period, you must arrange a Turkish licence under the applicable eligibility and procedures. Check your own position if staying longer or if you have a different citizenship status. The original licence must be valid and cover the vehicle category. Do not start counting from the rental date instead of your arrival, or treat an international permit as an extension of an expired licence. The time limit alone does not settle recognition of every document or translation requirements in every case. Ask the competent authority if your circumstances are unclear.
Prepare your driving documents before booking
Carry the original licence, passport, evidence of entry, and the vehicle and contract documents you are required to have. Ask the branch whether it accepts your particular Saudi licence and requires Latin-script details, a translation or an international driving permit. Send necessary information through the company's private channel. A licence displayed in a phone app may not satisfy the branch's requirement to produce the original. The rental company's acceptance is a separate matter. Avis's published conditions require a legible name and issue date in Latin script, with a notarised translation if those details are not in that script. Obtain an answer for your booking before paying: an intermediary may explain the reservation, while the branch decides whether it can release the vehicle. Also check minimum age, how long you must have held the licence, vehicle category and the card required for the deposit. Register everyone who will drive.
Speed limits: identify the road and vehicle category
KGM publishes different limits by road and vehicle category. The following figures are for passenger cars registered as M1 or M1G in the official table checked for the Arabic guide on 7 October 2026. They were reconfirmed for this English edition on 9 October. Do not apply them to a light commercial vehicle or minibus simply because it was hired for a family.| Road type for an M1 or M1G passenger car | General limit in the KGM table |
|---|---|
| Within built-up areas | 50 km/h |
| Two-way intercity roads outside built-up areas | 90 km/h |
| Divided roads outside built-up areas | 110 km/h |
| Motorways operated by KGM | 130 km/h |
| Motorways operated under the build–operate–transfer model, YİD | 140 km/h |
Section-specific signs, instructions and conditions matter. Do not set cruise control to the general limit and ignore roadworks, a tunnel or a village. For a long or commercial vehicle, ask for its registered category and read the relevant row of the official speed-limit table. HGS toll classes are a different classification and cannot be substituted for speed-limit categories.
Your first day: get used to the car before a long drive
Traffic drives on the right, but adjustment also involves the car's width, signs, pedestrian movements and junctions. Before leaving the rental branch, adjust the seat and mirrors, familiarise yourself with the lights, wipers, brakes and transmission, and plan your exit. Do not attempt all this at the first junction.Choose a straightforward hotel transfer if you arrive tired. At roundabouts, follow arrows, signs and the indicated priority rather than applying one assumption everywhere. Slow down at pedestrian crossings and watch both sides; do not stop on tram tracks. If you miss an exit, continue to the next safe route rather than making an abrupt manoeuvre to recover it.
Turkish words you will see on the road
| Word | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| DUR | Stop. |
| Yol Ver | Give way. |
| Tek Yön | One way. |
| Giriş / Çıkış | Entrance / exit. |
| Otopark | Car park. |
| Ücretli | Paid / subject to a charge. |
| Yol Çalışması | Roadworks. |
| Kapalı | Closed. |
Navigation and phones: prepare before setting off
Save the hotel's Turkish address and precise parking entrance, not just its name. Some buildings have a pedestrian entrance on one street and vehicle access on another. Use a phone mount that does not obstruct your view, charge the phone, and set the route and audio before driving. Downloaded maps help when reception is poor, but do not necessarily provide current congestion information. The traffic authority explains that phone use distracts drivers and increases driving errors. Let a passenger handle searches or stop safely before changing your destination. If the app proposes an unsuitable shortcut or closed road, follow actual conditions and signs. A coloured line on a screen is not permission to enter a prohibited street or pass a barrier.
City parking: check before leaving the car
Start with hotel parking or a known car park, then check the price, charging basis, opening hours and entrance clearance. A quoted price may cover a defined period, and overnight parking may cost differently from a short stay. Ask whether one ticket permits exit and re-entry and whether hotel parking needs advance reservation.İSPARK operates car parks in Istanbul and offers enquiries and payment through its official channels. That does not make every car park in the city an İSPARK facility: check the operator and payment receipt. Do not rely on someone asking for street payment without understanding their connection to the car park and its tariff, or assume parking is permitted because other cars are there.
- Keep entrances, passageways and accessible parking spaces clear as required by the signs.
- Park within the marked bay, with no part of the car on the pavement.
- Keep the ticket, receipt and a photograph of the parking location if useful.
- Save the car park's name or location, particularly if family members will return from different directions.
Making an Istanbul visit easier with a car
For central-city activities, compare leaving the car in a suitable car park and using public transport with driving between every sight. A short map distance can still involve a parking search and a walk afterwards. In some areas, reaching a nearby station or ferry pier is easier than driving into the destination.Use one parking base for the visit where the itinerary allows, and plan the return to it. For an evening outing, note your final transport connection back to the car. Before paying for a long stay, ask about overnight closure and whether you can retrieve the vehicle. A quiet car park in the evening does not establish 24-hour access.
The Black Sea region and mountain roads: distance is not journey time
Around Trabzon and the highlands, do not compare a mountain route with a motorway by kilometres alone. Bends, villages, fog, viewpoints and stops can make a 150 km day very different from the same distance on a level road. Group nearby destinations and start early enough for a comfortable return before fatigue or poor visibility.A high-clearance car does not automatically permit driving on an unpaved track or through water. Check the route's suitability and vehicle terms. On a long descent, use the technique appropriate to the vehicle and its instructions; avoid coasting in neutral or continuously applying the brakes until they overheat. If visibility or the road deteriorates, shorten the itinerary or turn back at a safe point. Postponing a viewpoint is easier than continuing on an unfamiliar, unsuitable route.

Weather and roadworks before each journey
Check weather along the route and at the destination, not just in the hotel city. Before an intercity drive, consult the daily road-condition bulletin and closure information. Read the road name, section and date: an old closure notice may no longer apply, while an open main road says nothing about every side road.In snow season, ask locally about vehicle equipment and route requirements. Having tyres available does not mean a mountain road is safe to visit. In rain, reduce speed, leave more distance and identify a safe place to stop if necessary. A maximum speed limit is not a target when conditions are less favourable.
Children, seat belts and luggage
Prepare a child seat or restraint appropriate to the child's height, weight and stage, and check its installation and product instructions. The traffic authority stresses selecting and fitting the correct seat. An adult's lap is not an alternative restraint, and a short restaurant journey is not a reason to skip it.Wear seat belts and secure large bags so they cannot become loose objects inside the cabin. Stop somewhere suitable for a child's needs rather than trying to solve the problem while driving. Prepare water and a day bag a passenger can reach, and agree flexible rest breaks. Drivers may share the driving only after each has been registered under the rental contract.
Budgeting a family driving day
Worked example: 180 km at an assumed planning average of 60 km/h requires three hours of movement. Add two breaks totalling 40 minutes and 20 minutes for finding parking and walking. The transfer becomes roughly four hours before any further delay. This average is a time-budgeting tool, not a speed you should drive or a fixed estimate for a particular road.Leaving at 09:00 under those assumptions gives a target arrival around 13:00. Allow for lunch and check-in or the activity, then calculate the return separately. Do not squeeze in three distant attractions because the navigation time to each looks short in isolation. Add every leg, stop and movement within each destination.
Fuel and charges along the route
Confirm the fuel type with the employee, filler cap and vehicle documents, and retain receipts. Refuel before a long stretch with few services rather than waiting for the warning light. If you put in the wrong fuel, stop operating the car and contact the company for instructions.Check HGS arrangements, administration charges, mileage allowances and fuel policy before departure. Do not treat a refundable deposit as a final journey expense, but leave sufficient available card limit for it. A hypothetical transfer budget might be TRY1,200 fuel + TRY600 tolls + TRY250 parking = TRY2,050, plus any contractual service charge. These are arithmetic examples, not current approved prices.
Checks, accidents and breakdowns
If an official authority directs you to stop, follow the instructions safely and prepare your documents calmly. For a breakdown, try to reach a safe position without increasing the danger and contact the company's assistance service. Emergencies needing police, medical assistance or rescue use 112. Give your location, direction of travel, number plate and a description of the situation. After an accident, put safety before documentation, then take photographs and collect incident details when conditions allow. Follow the authorities' instructions about the report and promptly notify the rental company of the documents it requires. Before agreeing to a cash repair or independently arranged tow, establish the company's accepted procedure so that the response does not create a separate unexpected expense.
Fines, towing and later claims
If a claim arrives, request the reason, supporting document, date, number plate and any rental-company administration fee. Penalties change and depend on the offence and circumstances; do not base a decision on an old list. Check current official guidance and the payment or appeal channel identified by the relevant authority. If the car is missing from its parking place, check the location and contact the authorities and rental company to establish whether it has been towed to an impound car park. Keep evidence of costs and collection time rather than relying on verbal arrangements. For a claim after the trip, compare the offence time with the vehicle return report. The card-debit date alone does not identify who was driving.
Returning to the branch or airport
Allow time for the correct car park, refuelling, inspection and unloading. If your schedule changes, obtain the branch's agreement to an extension and its cost before the contract expires. Check the fuel or battery level, record the odometer, remove the family's belongings and obtain the return report and available settlement statement.Keep documents and photographs until deposit, toll and later-fine checks are complete. Driving then becomes a manageable part of the itinerary: you know where to start, which route and parking to use, when to stop, how to return and which document explains each charge.
Quick questions before a driving day
Does the six-month period guarantee that the branch will accept my licence? No. It does not settle branch conditions or your documentation. Send the relevant details and check the reply and contract before booking.
Do passenger-car speed limits apply to every hire vehicle?
Read the registered vehicle category first. A family-oriented or high-clearance body style does not determine its legal class.
Is the navigation estimate the family's full arrival time?
Add breaks, refuelling, parking and walking. Recalculate the return instead of copying the outward estimate.
Should I drive into the city centre?
Compare parking, congestion and the day's movements. One parking base with walking or public transport may serve you better.
What should I keep after returning the car?
The contract, collection and return reports, photographs, receipts and deposit-tracking reference. Name the files with the number plate and date for easier later checks.
What is the last check on the morning of the trip?
Review weather, open roads, fuel and the correct destination, then set off with enough margin to change the plan without pressure on your driving.
