Central Anatolia, İç Anadolu Bölgesi, occupies the heart of Türkiye and is its second-largest geographical region by area. It lies between the Black Sea region to the north, the Mediterranean region to the south and neighbouring regions towards the west and east.
The national capital, Ankara, gives it particular political importance, alongside historic centres such as Konya, Kayseri and Nevşehir.
The region preserves major traces of Hittite, Phrygian, Seljuk and later Ottoman history in its settlements, monuments and successive cultural layers.
Broad plains and a continental climate define much of the landscape, while volcanic mountains such as Erciyes and Cappadocia’s rock-cut valleys add striking variety.
- Ankara: The modern capital and administrative centre, with Anıtkabir and important national museums.
- Konya: Closely associated with Rumi and Mevlevi spiritual heritage.
- Cappadocia and Nevşehir: Fairy chimneys, rock-cut settlements and balloon flights when conditions permit.
- Eskişehir: A university city with the Porsuk River, distinctive bridges and varied museums.
- Kayseri: A major industrial and trading city beneath Erciyes, known for foods including Kayseri mantısı.
Landscape and climate
Plains and valleys cover much of the region. Agriculture is important, particularly wheat and barley cultivation.Cappadocia’s eroded volcanic landscape is internationally recognised, while Erciyes offers winter skiing and high-mountain scenery. Summers can be hot and dry, winters cold, and mountain conditions differ markedly from those in towns.
Central Anatolia is an important agricultural and industrial region. Ankara and Eskişehir have manufacturing and aviation-related activity, while Konya and Kayseri combine agricultural production with substantial modern industry.
Traditional products include Konya carpets, Cappadocian pottery, dairy foods and sweets.
- April–October offers a broad window for sightseeing and outdoor activities, but choose individual dates for the heat, altitude and activity involved. Winter sports require a separate seasonal plan.
- Consider a Cappadocian balloon flight around sunrise, allowing for weather cancellations.
- Visit the Mevlâna Museum in Konya respectfully as a cultural and spiritual site.
- Set aside at least a day for a selection of Ankara’s museums, historic streets and parks.
