Contactless payments can be made with a suitable card, phone or watch at a compatible terminal. Phone payments require more than simply having NFC: the device, payment service and card must all be supported.
1. What is NFC?
Near-field communication is a short-range technology used by many contactless cards and devices. A phone or watch needs a compatible payment application or service and an eligible card; not every device-card combination works in Türkiye.
2. When can a phone add protection?
A supported service may use a screen lock, fingerprint, face recognition or another device check. This can add useful protection compared with carrying an unsecured physical card.
Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: Do not assume every tap requires a new biometric check. Authentication and exceptions depend on the service and transaction. Türkiye-based banks can provide their own supported Android NFC payment services; this does not establish universal Apple Pay or Google Wallet support for Turkish-issued cards.
For example, İş Bankası describes an NFC-enabled Android route through İşCep or Maximum Mobil, subject to its current device and card requirements. Check your own bank's official instructions.
3. Secure the device
• Use a strong device PIN or password and suitable biometric protection.
• Enable available transaction alerts and check the account regularly.
• Review the payment app's default-card, lock and limit settings.
• You can turn NFC off when you do not use it, where the device permits; this is an optional control and does not replace securing the device.
• If the phone is lost, use the supported device or wallet tools to lock it or suspend payment credentials where possible, and contact the issuer promptly.
4. Avoid unnecessary exposure
Do not leave the phone unlocked or give someone control of it to “try” your banking app or pay for you. Do not keep payment credentials on a device you cannot adequately protect.
A lost phone and a lost physical card may require separate action. Remotely locking a device should not be assumed to stop every pending transaction or protect a physical card.
Choose a supported setup
Contactless payments are convenient when the service is eligible and the device is secured. Understand the actual approval rules and lost-device procedure rather than assuming all wallets behave alike.
