Tralleis and the surroundings of Aydın

Aydın 2026: the Menderes Valley and Aegean coast

Aydın province stretches between the agricultural land of the Büyük Menderes Valley and the Aegean coast. Its service, trading and industrial towns sit alongside well-known holiday destinations such as Kuşadası and Didim. Distinguish central Aydın, within Efeler district, from the whole province: a city base, coastal resort and inland farming town offer different experiences.

Population: which year do the figures describe?

The province had 1,172,107 residents in 2025, up 6,164, or approximately 0.53%, from 2024. These are 2025 figures used in a 2026 guide, rather than an end-of-2026 count. Aydın has 17 administrative districts. Registered population also differs from the number physically present in resorts during peak season.

Principal districts and towns
  • Efeler: includes central Aydın and is the province's most populous district, with 310,241 residents in 2025. It is the administrative and service centre, useful for regular city-based work or official business.
  • Nazilli: 162,156 residents. An important eastern centre combining commerce, farming, industry and residential life.
  • Kuşadası: 141,431 residents. Coastal tourism, its port and cruises shape an economy whose activity varies by season.
  • Söke: 123,843 residents. Associated with a broad agricultural plain, commerce and industry, and services for nearby coastal areas.
  • Didim: 103,141 residents. Known for beaches such as Altınkum and the Temple of Apollo, combining seaside and archaeological visits.

Agriculture in 2026: the importance of figs

Figs, olives, cotton and chestnuts are major local products, supporting drying, packing, pressing, processing and trade. In a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry announcement at the end of August 2026, the minister stated during a visit to the Fig Research Institute in İncirliova that Aydın produces around 60% of Türkiye's figs and 84% of its organic figs.

The institute's gene bank conserves genetic material from 354 fig varieties. Economic value also depends on drying, storage and processing quality, which affect marketing and exports. The ministry stressed cooperation between growers, exporters and public bodies to improve quality and reduce problems that can cause shipments to be rejected.

Economy: agriculture, tourism and industry

Processing agricultural goods adds value through dried figs, olive oil and other foods. Other activities include textiles, agricultural machinery, olive-processing equipment, packaging and additional industrial sectors. Coastal accommodation, restaurants, transport and visitor services contrast with the inland towns' mixture of everyday services, commerce and production. Employment opportunities therefore vary by district.

Heritage in 2026: an update from Tralleis

Sites include Tralleis, Aphrodisias, Nysa, Miletus and Priene. Organise visits around your base rather than attempting them all in one day.

An August 2026 provincial tourism announcement reported completion of excavation and restoration of an approximately 2,000-year-old pool in the Tralleis bath–gymnasium complex, measuring 37 by 12 metres. Work on the region's heritage continues; check visiting arrangements and public access before setting out.

Choosing where to stay
  • Work and services: compare Efeler and Nazilli according to your workplace or regular appointments.
  • Sea and tourism: compare Kuşadası and Didim, then check the property's position relative to beaches and services.
  • Longer stays: assess year-round facilities, transport, insulation and air conditioning; summer is hot in the plains and lowlands.
  • Several destinations: calculate actual travel times and return arrangements, particularly by public transport.
Start with your purpose: the centre for services, inland towns for work and agricultural activity, the coast for holidays, and archaeological routes for the history of the Menderes Valley.
