Hasan Paşa Hanı combines a historic building, a break and browsing small shops in Diyarbakır’s old city. Allow for a relaxed visit during a walk around Sur, with time to see the courtyard before looking for a souvenir. A coffee, a stroll and comparing a small item can be enough to make the visit worthwhile; there is no need for a large purchase.

📍 Location and character
The caravanserai stands east of Ulu Cami, the Great Mosque, in Sur. It is a two-storey Ottoman building with a courtyard and a domed fountain in the centre, on Gazi Caddesi opposite the mosque’s eastern entrance.

Save the name on your map and make your walk through the old city part of the outing. Do not assume a car can reach the entrance: arrange drop-off and meeting points according to road and lane conditions on the day.

🛍️ Browsing without rushing
Walk around the courtyard and open shops first, then compare the gifts and accessories actually on sale. Ask about an item’s material and place of manufacture: being sold in a historic building does not mean every product is traditional or handmade.

For silver jewellery or prayer beads, check the small details, fixings, thread or clasp. Request a receipt describing the material for a valuable purchase, and do not base your decision on a vague spoken claim such as “genuine”.

☕ Shopping or a break first?
Start with a short break and then browse, or see the courtyard before choosing somewhere to sit. Read the menu and prices before ordering, and ask what a meal or sharing platter contains and how many people it serves.

Do not assume every courtyard-facing seating area offers the same prices or service. If a break is your main reason for visiting, budget for it separately from gifts.

🚶 Combining the caravanserai with the old city
The nearby Great Mosque makes the two a convenient combination on foot. Leave flexibility: stopping at shops and taking photographs can make the walk longer than expected. Carry a light bag, wear comfortable shoes and ask about easier routes if someone in your group struggles with steps.

The upper floor and historic passages may not suit every pushchair or wheelchair. Check access rather than planning on the assumption that modern facilities are available.

📷 Visiting with the family
Agree on a clear courtyard meeting point in case you split up. Ask permission before photographing staff or the inside of shops, and keep the entrance clear when taking photographs.

Browse before buying, and keep the caravanserai’s address and your hotel’s location on your phone. Call the particular shop if you are seeking specific goods, as shops and cafés do not necessarily keep the same hours.
