Choosing a Public Transport Card in a New Turkish City
Compare travel cards, tickets and bank-card payments, then calculate what your journeys will cost

You arrive in a new Turkish city and find a transport card, a ticket for a fixed number of journeys, a mobile app and a reader that accepts bank cards. Which should you choose? Start with your itinerary: where is your hotel, how will you reach it, how many times will you pay, and will you need a suburban train or a separate airport service? A useful purchase for five busy days may be unnecessary on a short visit spent mostly on foot.

This guide helps you make that decision in Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Antalya and Bursa, then use the same approach elsewhere. The original system information was reviewed on 7 October 2026 and the operator guidance checked again for this English edition on 9 October. The calculations below are hypothetical teaching examples, not current fares for any particular city.

🧭 Plan your routes before buying a card

Write down three journeys before comparing products: airport to hotel, hotel to the place you expect to visit most often, and hotel to airport on departure. Identify each service: municipal bus, metro, tram, suburban railway, ferry or an airport coach run by a separate operator. A city name alone does not tell you the fare or payment method.

If your hotel is close to your destination, two or four paid boardings may be enough. Staying farther away and using a bus followed by a metro every day means paying more often, even if you describe the plan as “two journeys a day”. Count paid boardings, rather than sightseeing stops. Reaching a museum on two services may involve two fares or a discounted transfer; keep those possibilities separate in your calculation.

Save a short note on your phone: the line, operator, accepted payment method and any instructions for leaving the system. This helps you avoid buying a good local product that excludes the airport leg you actually need.

💳 Understand the five main products

ProductHow it worksWhen to consider it
Standard reloadable cardBuy the card, then add credit from which fares are deductedFrequent travel or access to a wider local network
Limited-use ticketA set number of boardings, subject to the ticket's conditionsA short visit with a few known journeys
Direct bank-card paymentTap an accepted bank card on the transport readerA few journeys for which you would prefer not to buy a local card
Digital card or ticketUse the operator's app in the way it specifiesWhen your phone and intended services support it
Pass or time-based productTravel for a specified period or number of boardings under stated conditionsAfter checking eligibility, coverage and expected use

Buying a card does not necessarily put credit on it. A “digital card” is also not necessarily your bank card in a phone wallet: it may have its own balance and a different reading method. “Unlimited” is only part of the description. Check when validity starts, which services are included, the exclusions and whether the product is personal. Student and resident products depend on proven eligibility; a lower price or different colour does not make them suitable for every visitor.

🏙️ Which name should you look for in each city?

CityName on websites and machinesWhat matters for your decision
IstanbulİstanbulkartDistinguish stored credit, limited-use tickets and tourist time passes
AnkaraBaşkent Kart UlaşımCompare bank-card fares with transport-card fares and transfers
İzmirİzmirim KartCheck İZBAN in particular, including balance and exit requirements
AntalyaAntalyakartBank cards and limited-use tickets have different transfer rights
BursaBursaKartThe route category and bank-card service charge affect the total

Istanbul: The municipal visitor guide describes stored-credit İstanbulkart, limited-use tickets, İstanbul City Card passes of different durations and contactless bank-card payment. Standard cards can be bought and topped up at BELBİM machines or sales outlets. Choose according to your journeys: buying a card does not itself provide free travel, and different payment methods need not share the same benefits. Check separate operators, particularly airport services, before assuming they are included. The visitor guide also says unused İstanbulkart credit is not refunded at the end of a visit, so topping up gradually helps avoid a large leftover balance.

Ankara: EGO now uses the name Başkent Kart Ulaşım; older guides may call it Ankarakart. The published local fare arrangements cover EGO buses, metro, Ankaray, Başkentray and specified private urban services. Accepted bank cards are a separate payment method, with a different fare and without the transport card's transfer entitlement. EGO lists sales and top-up outlets and service centres; check the location and hours against your arrival. Personalising a standard card can protect its balance under the system's conditions, but does not establish eligibility for a discounted product.

İzmir: A physical İzmirim Kart is especially useful if your itinerary includes İZBAN. The official card website excludes that suburban railway when describing its digital-card and direct bank-card alternatives. Buy the physical card at an authorised outlet or a machine offering sales and top-ups. Do not automatically substitute a bank card if your first or airport journey uses İZBAN. Bilet 35 is a separate limited-use product: read its boarding allowance and conditions rather than treating it as an ordinary reloadable card.

Antalya: Options include standard reloadable and personalised cards, limited-use tickets, bank cards and digital products. The official website permits more than one person to use a standard anonymous card, but that does not make every family member's tap a discounted transfer. Limited-use tickets cannot be reloaded and do not include transfers; contactless bank cards also have no transfer entitlement. Standard cards are sold at service centres, outlets and sales machines. For online top-ups, follow the instructions for applying the credit at the reader and keep the receipt until the balance appears.

Bursa: Look for BursaKart under BURULAŞ. Fares vary by route category, so a longer outlying bus journey should not be priced as a central tram ride. The published credit-card tariff includes a service charge. Transfers depend on the stated time and route conditions, and some benefits are linked to a personalised standard card. Budget conservatively until you know your product qualifies. Read the BursaRay refund-reader instructions when leaving: a refund is not guaranteed for every journey or payment method.

🧮 Calculate the cost before paying

A useful comparison is product purchase price + fares you expect to use + known service charges + any credit you expect to leave unused. Count the leftover credit once: do not add both the whole top-up and the fares paid from it. If you already own a valid card, its earlier purchase price is not part of the new trip's decision. For a pass, compare only journeys that it actually covers.

Hypothetical short visit: Suppose a card costs 120 units, a boarding with it costs 30, and direct payment costs 40. Four boardings cost 120 + 4 × 30 = 240 with a new card, compared with 4 × 40 = 160 by direct payment. The card is more expensive here, provided the alternative is accepted throughout your itinerary and has no additional charges.

Hypothetical frequent travel: Using the same figures, 20 boardings cost 120 + 20 × 30 = 720 with the card, compared with 800 by direct payment. At 12 boardings the totals are equal, at 480; above that, the card saves money. This is not a universal break-even point. Substitute the actual local prices.

Hypothetical pass: If a pass costs 600 but your covered journeys would cost 450 separately, a generous boarding allowance does not make it a saving. If half your itinerary is excluded, add those separate fares to the 600 before comparing.

🟠 These figures are examples only. They are not Turkish-lira prices or current local fares. Use the operator's tariff for your visit, and include discounted transfers only when you have checked the conditions.

🔄 Card acceptance and transfer discounts are different

Ask two separate questions: can I board with this card? and does this tap qualify as a transfer? Two services may accept the same card but charge full fare each time. A transfer benefit may require a personalised product, a time limit or specified routes, and may exclude limited-use tickets or bank-card payment.

İzmir's rules provide a 90-minute window for eligible fares, with restrictions on repeated taps and the interval between them. Returning to the same gate or tapping several times does not prove that a free transfer applies. Ankara also has transport-card transfer conditions and route exceptions, while bank cards are treated differently. After a lengthy visit, budget for a new fare home rather than assuming an earlier transfer window lasts all day.

If your app suggests a bus followed by a metro, enter the full fares first, then adjust once you have confirmed any reduction. That leaves enough money if a wait or route change affects eligibility.

🚆 Suburban trains, exit readers and separate services

Metro and suburban trains may appear together on a journey map while using different gates or fare rules. Istanbul has Marmaray, Ankara has Başkentray and İzmir has İZBAN. Check payment for the train itself, rather than relying on what the connecting bus accepts.

Distance-based systems may require enough credit for a temporary deduction larger than the fare for your short journey. İzmir's guidance explains how the unused portion is released at the correct refund reader. On suburban services using Artı Para, use the designated reader at your destination station. Read the instructions before leaving; the boarding reader is not a substitute. Missing the required tap can mean losing the refund.

Ask before entering: how much balance is required, whether you must tap on exit, where the correct reader is, and whether your product qualifies. Airport services, intercity coaches and sightseeing ferries have their own conditions; a city card does not cover every passenger service in the area.

🛒 Buy and top up your card step by step

  1. Go to an official-system outlet or an operator machine at a suitable station. Some machines only top up cards: look for a sales option or ask a member of staff.
  2. Choose a standard product appropriate for a visitor. Read its name, boarding allowance or duration before selecting the cheapest option, which may require eligibility.
  3. Check the card purchase price and the top-up amount separately. Keep the receipt and a clear photograph of the card number.
  4. Start with enough for arrival, the return and some expected local travel. Add credit as your plans become clearer.
  5. Check the balance displayed after topping up. A successful bank payment alone does not show that the credit is ready on the transport card.
  6. Make your first tap without rushing and check the acceptance message and fare. Stay near staff if you see a message you do not understand.

For a phone top-up, use an app or website reached through the official operator. Note the time and amount and follow any activation instructions. If it fails, check the status and receipt or ask for help before making several rapid repeat payments. For a late arrival, find a machine on your actual route beforehand and prepare a reasonable alternative if it is unavailable.

📱 Keep bank-card top-ups and direct payment separate

Using a bank card to add transport credit differs from tapping that bank card to travel. In the first case you still use the transport product and its rules; in the second, the operator's direct-payment fare and conditions apply. The source of the money does not transfer the first product's benefits to the second.

A contactless symbol on a foreign card does not guarantee acceptance by every reader. Check supported card networks, your bank's overseas-payment settings and its currency-conversion charges. Those bank charges are separate from the transport fare. If using a phone wallet, check operator support and use the same payment device for linked journey taps as instructed.

A practical backup: carry a physical card or another way to complete an important journey. A flat phone battery can stop you travelling even when the app works well. Leave enough time before an airport journey if trying an unfamiliar payment method.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families: count passengers and paid taps

Start with the number of fare-paying passengers and check the relevant operator's child rules. Age alone does not establish free travel on every system or product. A personalised discount card is subject to its holder's eligibility; do not plan group payment around using someone else's card.

An anonymous card may allow multiple boardings, as Antalya's system explains, but check how to tap, how many fares are charged and whether transfers apply to each person. One card with a large balance is not always cheaper than separate cards. Separate cards also offer flexibility if some family members shop elsewhere or return early.

Multiply one person's route cost by the number of paying passengers, then add the purchase price of the cards you need. In the example above, four boardings for each of four people mean 16 paid taps, not four. Keep adults' and children's cards easy to distinguish and move away from the reader before reorganising the group.

🧳 Leaving the city or travelling to the next one

On the last day, set aside enough credit for the airport journey before spending it on extra outings. Write down every leg, fare and payment method: an airport coach may require separate payment even if you reach its stop using the city card. Top up for that route with a modest, understood allowance rather than a large sum you expect to reclaim in cash.

Do not load an İzmir card for travel in Istanbul, or assume that a shared technology provider makes local cards interchangeable. Start your payment checklist again when changing cities. Keep a card for a future visit if appropriate, but check its validity and balance conditions before returning after a long absence.

If you lose it, have the card number and latest receipt ready when contacting the operator. Balance protection and transfer depend on the product and personalisation; they are not guaranteed for anonymous cards. A photograph helps identify a lost card, but cannot replace it at the reader.

❓ Common questions

Should I buy a card for a one-day visit?
Count the actual paid boardings and product cost. Direct payment or a limited-use ticket may suit you if accepted and available. The length of the visit alone does not decide it.

Does adding a large balance earn a discount?
Only if the operator offers a specific product under published terms. Ordinary stored credit is money set aside for travel, some of which you may not use.

My new card did not open the gate. Is it faulty?
Check the balance, product, service acceptance and top-up activation. Show the message to staff before buying another card.

Should frequent travel mean buying a monthly pass?
Compare only covered journeys, check whether a visitor can buy it and when its validity begins. An unavailable pass or one excluding your routes will not solve the problem.

Do I need an app if I have a physical card?
It can help with information and supported top-ups. Check how it works: installing an app does not remove a route's physical-card requirement.

🟠 Before your first boarding: check payment acceptance, fare, transfer conditions, required balance and exit instructions. These checks help you choose the right product and finish your journey without relying on discounts that do not apply.
