Card controls in a banking app can help you manage spending and respond quickly when something is wrong. Learn what your own bank's controls actually do before you need them.

Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: The effect and duration of a temporary lock vary by issuer. It may not stop every pending or recurring transaction. Turning off online payments or locking a card does not cancel a subscription, a debt or a merchant agreement.

1. Temporarily locking a card
A temporary lock may be useful while looking for a misplaced card or when you want to restrict its use. Read the bank's instructions about reopening it and any replacement process.

If the card may be stolen or you see an unauthorised payment, promptly use the bank's lost-card or fraud procedure. Do not rely solely on a temporary lock or assume it freezes the entire account.

2. Adjusting daily limits
Your bank may let you manage purchase, ATM withdrawal or other limits. Contactless limits and controls are not necessarily adjustable in the same way at every bank.

Keep the available limits appropriate to your normal use. If you raise one for a particular purchase, reduce it afterwards when suitable. A limit is one safeguard, not complete protection against fraud.

3. Enabling or disabling online purchases
Where supported, restricting online purchases when you do not need them can reduce exposure. Check how the setting affects genuine purchases and recurring charges. Use the merchant's cancellation procedure to end an unwanted subscription; disabling the card setting is not a substitute.

4. Contactless payments
Check whether your issuer offers a contactless control and what it covers. If you rarely use contactless payments, ask about the available options rather than assuming every card has an on/off switch.

5. Transaction alerts
Enable available purchase, withdrawal and security alerts. Prompt notifications can help you notice a problem early, although delivery and coverage are not guaranteed. Check your statements as well.

Use the controls as a routine
Know where the lock, limits and payment settings are located, keep the bank's official contact details accessible, and report suspicious activity promptly. These tools work best alongside careful monitoring.
