Sporting Week, 20–27 December 2025: The Final Push before the Break
An archived end-of-year preview. Calendar corrections below were reviewed in October 2026.
The closing days of the sporting year bring pressure and excitement as clubs try to finish 2025 strongly before the break. Here is the week's sporting picture, with the original talking points and the verified dates distinguished clearly.
The last round of the first half of the league season fell around this weekend. The initial Saturday-and-Sunday description was incomplete: the official results archive records round 17 across 19–22 December 2025.
The big-match talking point: Trabzonspor against Beşiktaş is a classic fixture capable of shaping the contest for the leading four places. It was initially highlighted here as a Sunday-evening game in this week's programme; in fact, the clubs had already drawn 3–3 on Sunday 14 December, in round 16. In round 17, Beşiktaş beat Çaykur Rizespor 1–0 on 20 December, while Trabzonspor lost 4–3 away to Gençlerbirliği on 22 December.
The relegation battle: At the other end of the table, struggling clubs were seeking vital survival points before the transfer window opened—a final chance to improve their position before reassessing their squads.
There was little respite for Türkiye's basketball representatives as they pursued stronger positions in the race for the play-offs. The original preview described a double-game week and highlighted these two attractions:
Fenerbahçe Beko: A Tuesday-evening home meeting with Spanish giants Real Madrid at Ülker Arena was presented as one of the season's outstanding fixtures. Calendar correction: Fenerbahçe's opponent on Tuesday 23 December was Barcelona; the official EuroLeague match record confirms a 72–71 home win.
Anadolu Efes: A trip to Greece to face Olympiacos was billed as a crucial contest with little margin for error. Calendar correction: Efes' scheduled away opponent on 23 December was LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in France. The club's published calendar places its trip to Olympiacos on 14 October, rather than in this December week.
The double-game label also needs its proper context: Efes' round-16 and round-17 dates were 17 and 19 December, before this preview's 20–27 December window; round 18 followed on 23 December.
The prospect of an early Istanbul derby in the cup's knockout rounds was an obvious topic for supporters once the league fixtures were over. However, the announced Thursday 25 December round-of-16 draw in the original preview was incorrect. TFF had already held the group-stage draw on 5 December 2025: 24 clubs were divided into three groups of eight, with eight teams eventually progressing directly to the quarter-finals. This part of December belonged to the opening group-match programme, rather than a last-16 draw.
Sarıkamış in Kars offers a setting for skiing and cultural events amid the snow. An opening of the “Sarıkamış Winter Festival” during 20–27 December, with thousands of tourists and athletes gathering to celebrate the end of the year, was also announced in the original preview.
Event-date clarification, October 2026: that specific festival opening and attendance claim could not be confirmed in an official dated announcement. The provincial tourism guide describes a snow festival in February and commemorative events in the first week of January; its general seasonal information does not establish a festival in this December week. Treat the announced December festival as unconfirmed, rather than a verified event listing.
Looking back at the week's big-match discussion: would you have backed Trabzonspor to overcome Beşiktaş, or the Black Eagles to take all three points? The actual 14 December meeting finished level at 3–3.
