Türkiye offers experiences to take part in alongside hotels and shopping:
boat trips, museums and palaces, castles with a view, green mountains, Turkish baths, theme parks, cable cars, performances and theatre.
This guide gives an overview of Türkiye's main attractions and visitor activities,
with ideas for İstanbul, Antalya, the Black Sea region, Cappadocia, Bursa, İzmir and other destinations.
history and culture
1) Major historic sights in İstanbul
Sultanahmet:- Hagia Sophia, both a mosque and a historic landmark; worship and cultural sightseeing have different access arrangements.
- Sultanahmet Mosque, the Blue Mosque.
- Sultanahmet Square and surviving monuments of the Hippodrome, including the Egyptian Obelisk and Serpent Column.
Topkapı Palace:- Home to the Ottoman sultans for centuries.
- Gardens overlooking the Bosphorus and Golden Horn.
- Collections of historic objects, swords and precious possessions; check the ticket's covered sections and current access.
Eminönü and the Golden Horn area:- Süleymaniye Mosque.
- Rüstem Paşa Mosque.
- Views of bridges, boats and historic bazaars.
2) Museums, palaces and historic sites elsewhere
Antalya:- Antalya Archaeological Museum is an important collection, but as checked on 13 October 2026 the Ministry lists the museum as closed from 16 July 2025 for the new-museum and collection-moving works, until completion. Do not plan an interior visit without confirmed reopening.
- Kaleiçi, the old town, its walls and Clock Tower.
Ankara:- The Museum of Anatolian Civilisations. Its Ankara and Classical halls are listed as closed from 14 September 2026, with an estimated reopening on 2 March 2027, as checked on 13 October; this is a two-hall restriction, rather than closure of the whole museum.
- Anıtkabir, Atatürk's mausoleum.
İzmir and the western coast:- Ephesus near Selçuk; check any restricted routes before visiting.
- Numerous ancient Greek and Roman sites along the Aegean coast.
Tip:
If history interests you, allow at least:
– A full day for Sultanahmet, Topkapı and the Grand Bazaar in İstanbul, adjusting the scope to opening days and your pace.
– Another day for an old town and accessible museums in Antalya, Ankara or İzmir, according to your route and current closures.
the Bosphorus, islands and boat trips
1) Bosphorus trips in İstanbul
Shorter trips from Eminönü or Kabataş, depending on the operator:- Allow roughly two to three hours for the kind of sightseeing outing described here; check the actual timetable and route.
- See palaces, bridges and neighbourhoods such as Ortaköy, Beşiktaş and Bebek, according to the route.
Sunset and dinner trips:- Larger boats may offer dinner and folk performances.
- An option for families or couples wanting an evening on the Bosphorus; check the atmosphere and package inclusions.
2) The Princes' Islands
- A group of islands in the Sea of Marmara, the best-known being:
- Büyükada, literally the large island.
- Possible activities:
- Hire a bicycle where suitable and permitted. For electric transport, use the authorised services and their current routes and rules; do not assume that private electric carts are available to hire.
- Walk up hills with sea views.
- Pause at seaside cafés and restaurants; quieter conditions depend on the season and location.
3) Boat trips in the south and north
Antalya, Fethiye and Marmaris:- Boat routes can include bays, caves and tucked-away beaches.
- Full-day outings may include swimming and snorkelling stops, subject to the route and sea conditions.
The Black Sea region, including Ordu and Trabzon:- Some coastal towns offer shorter boat trips; check local availability.
- These can be enjoyable summer outings when weather and sea conditions are suitable.
nature, mountains and lakes
1) The Black Sea region — lakes, highlands and waterfalls
Uzungöl:- A lake surrounded by green mountains.
- Walk around the lake, visit highland viewpoints, look for seasonal slide attractions and sit somewhere with a view; confirm individual activities locally.
Ayder and Fırtına Valley in Rize:- Rivers, stone bridges, waterfalls and guided river rafting, with suitability dependent on conditions and the operator's requirements.
- Places to relax outdoors and restaurants serving local food.
Ordu and its highlands:- The Boztepe cable car overlooks the city and sea; check current operation before travelling.
- Sit at a café with a view and take photographs.
2) Bursa, Sapanca and Yalova
Bursa:- Uludağ offers mountain outings, winter skiing when conditions and facilities permit, and summer places to relax. The Bursa cable-car operator's website showed a planned-maintenance closure on 13 October 2026: confirm reopening before relying on it; no reopening date is guaranteed here.
- Forests and parks around the city.
Sapanca and Maşukiye:- Lake Sapanca, with places to walk, cycle where permitted and sit at lakeside cafés.
- Maşukiye's waterfalls and streamside settings.
Yalova and its hot springs:- Mineral-water baths and spa resorts; check the facility and services you want to use.
3) Cappadocia
Hot-air ballooning:- One of Türkiye's best-known visitor experiences.
- Flights over valleys and unusual rock formations around sunrise when authorised weather conditions permit; departures are not guaranteed.
Valleys and underground cities:- Rose Valley and Love Valley, alongside the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı: the latter are cities beneath the ground, rather than valley names.
- Jeep-safari or ATV outings among the rock formations, on authorised routes and subject to the operator's requirements.
family entertainment, theme parks and aquariums
Theme parks and entertainment complexes:- Vialand in İstanbul, formerly known as İsfanbul.
- The Land of Legends in the Antalya/Belek area, combining resort accommodation, water attractions and rides; access products and seasonal operations differ.
- Smaller funfairs and leisure parks in various towns and cities.
Aquariums and animal-related attractions:- İstanbul Aquarium in the Florya area.
- Aqua Florya, the neighbouring shopping complex; it is distinct from aquarium admission.
- Antalya Aquarium and similar venues; check the precise attraction rather than assuming that every complex includes a zoo.
Large parks and hilltop viewpoints:- İstanbul's Çamlıca hills.
- Parks such as Emirgan Grove, particularly during the tulip season.
- Parks overlooking the sea in Antalya and İzmir.
culture, Turkish baths and performances
Turkish baths:- Traditional bathing, cleansing and massage experiences in historic and modern hammams.
- Options in İstanbul, Bursa, Yalova, Cappadocia and Antalya.
Cultural and artistic performances:- Whirling dervish performances at appropriate venues.
- Belly-dance or folk performances at some visitor-oriented restaurants and on dinner boats.
- Theatre productions and concerts in larger cities.
Food and street-food experiences:- Tasting walks in İstanbul's old neighbourhoods.
- Try Turkish kebabs, fish and sweets such as baklava, künefe and Turkish delight.
- Explore local food markets in Antalya, the Black Sea region and İzmir.
shopping, local markets and festivals
Historic bazaars:- The Grand Bazaar, Kapalıçarşı.
- The Spice Bazaar, Mısır Çarşısı.
- Local markets in Antalya, Bursa and Trabzon.
Modern malls:- İstanbul malls such as Vadistanbul, Zorlu Center, Cevahir and Mall of İstanbul.
- Malls in Antalya, İzmir and other visitor destinations.
Seasonal events and festivals:- İstanbul's tulip events.
- Tea-related festivals in Rize.
- Summer coastal events, including concerts and food festivals; check each year's announced programme and dates.
planning your experiences without rushing
İstanbul, three to five days:- A history day in Sultanahmet and Topkapı.
- A market day for the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar.
- A Bosphorus outing, with islands or hilltop views on a separate or carefully planned part of the itinerary according to travel time.
- An entertainment day at a mall, aquarium or theme park, according to your interests.
Antalya or the southern coast, three to five days:- A day for boats or beaches.
- A history day in the old town and accessible museums, checking closures.
- A theme-park or water-park day, subject to seasonal operations.
- A day trip to a nearby town or waterfall.
The Black Sea region, three to five days:- A day at Uzungöl.
- A day for Ayder and Fırtına Valley, adjusting stops to driving time.
- One or two days for Trabzon and an optional Ordu/Boztepe outing; allow for the transfer and current cable-car status.
Cappadocia, two to three days:- A morning reserved for a balloon flight, with flexibility for weather cancellation.
- A day for valleys and underground cities.
- An ATV or safari outing towards sunset, where available and suitable.
common mistakes when choosing activities
Trying to fit too much into four or five days:- Combining İstanbul, the Black Sea region, Antalya and Cappadocia in one short trip can mean spending most of your time travelling.
- Choose no more than two or three regions for a trip, and fewer when time is limited.
Focusing entirely on shopping:- Many visitors return without trying:
- A Bosphorus trip, hammam, balloon flight, cable car or boat outing.
- Divide your time between history, nature, entertainment and shopping.
Booking many activities without considering the weather:- Balloon flights, boats and water activities can be cancelled because of conditions.
- Keep a flexible day in your itinerary in case plans change.
Building a memorable trip:
Türkiye offers experiences as well as photographs:
– İstanbul combines history, water, markets and entertainment.
– The Black Sea region offers nature, mountains and lakes.
– The south offers beaches, boats and theme parks.
– Cappadocia offers balloons, valleys and distinctive landscapes.
Choose what suits your travel style and budget,
and build a mixture of sights, nature, entertainment, culture and food,
so that you return feeling you have experienced the country rather than simply passed through it.
