Why the add/drop period matters
The start of a semester is your chance to check that your courses, workload and timetable fit together. A course that looks suitable on paper may clash with a laboratory, require a subject you have not passed, or leave you with an unrealistic workload. Resolve these problems within your university's published add/drop period, rather than waiting until they affect your results.Three different procedures
- Add/drop: changing registered courses or sections during the permitted window.
- Course withdrawal: formally leaving a course under a separate procedure, often after add/drop has closed. A W or another notation may remain on your transcript.
- Leave of absence: applying to suspend an entire semester. This has its own conditions and is not the same as dropping an individual course.
Find your actual deadline
Many universities arrange timetable changes near the beginning of the semester, sometimes within the first week or two. This is not a nationwide deadline. Check the current academic calendar, your programme's rules and any faculty announcement. Initial semester registration may be a prerequisite: do not assume add/drop is a second opportunity to complete a missed registration.Where to make the change
Use the university's student information system, often called OBS. Your academic adviser (Danışman), department or Student Affairs office (Öğrenci İşleri) can explain approval requirements or resolve a registration block.A practical six-step process
- Open the course-registration page in your own student account.
- Select the course to add or remove, checking its code and section.
- Review the entire timetable, including tutorials, practical classes and laboratories.
- Check prerequisites and corequisites: some subjects must be passed beforehand; others must be taken together.
- Submit the change and obtain any required adviser or departmental approval. A saved draft may not be an approved registration.
- Check the final status and save a dated copy of your approved course list.
Dropping a course versus withdrawing
A course removed within the add/drop window commonly does not appear as a failed attempt. Later withdrawal can leave a transcript notation and may be limited by course type, workload or the number of previous withdrawals. Its effect on GPA, fees, scholarship conditions and future registration depends on your institution. Check each consequence before submitting. Before you remove a course
- Minimum workload: confirm the required credits and your student status.
- Scholarship conditions: check the award's progress and enrolment requirements separately.
- Graduation planning: a compulsory course offered only once a year, or needed for a later prerequisite, can delay your degree.
- Timetable accuracy: check every associated class, rather than only the main lecture.
Common problems
- The course is missing: check whether it is offered this semester, belongs to your curriculum, has places available or requires a prerequisite.
- The system will not remove it: look for a linked corequisite or a workload restriction and ask your adviser.
- Approval is pending: contact the responsible adviser before the deadline; do not assume the system will approve it automatically.
- A lecture clashes with a laboratory: investigate another section or a different elective, subject to approval.
Use the first few days well
Attend your registered classes from the start, review the syllabuses and discuss any changes promptly. Reviewing your timetable within the first 72 hours can be a useful planning target, but your university's published calendar sets the actual deadline. Keep attending according to the university's rules while a change is pending, and avoid leaving your request until the final day.Quick questions
Does dropping one course cancel a student residence permit? There is no general rule that removing one course automatically cancels a permit. Maintaining the relevant student status matters. Ask your international office and migration authority about your circumstances before a substantial reduction, leave of absence or interruption of study.
Can I change a timetable that has already been approved?
Changes may be possible during add/drop, with renewed approval where required. After the deadline, a separate procedure or exceptional permission may be necessary.
