A student budget can disappear through forgotten subscriptions, withdrawal fees and small purchases that are never added up. A simple monthly routine makes these costs easier to see.
1. Divide your money into three categories
• Essentials: housing, food and transport.
• Study: books, printing and courses.
• Leisure: cafés, meals out and events.
Set a realistic amount for each category after checking your actual income and unavoidable costs. Keep track of what remains rather than treating the account balance as money available for leisure.
2. Use convenient payments and keep modest emergency cash
A card can make everyday spending easier to track. Choose withdrawals around your own bank's ATM network, tariff and limits.
Editorial clarification — 8 October 2026: Withdrawing once a week does not automatically reduce fees. Charges can depend on the ATM, amount, account and allowances. If a suitable ATM is free, fewer withdrawals may save nothing. Avoid carrying unnecessary cash simply to follow a weekly rule.
3. Use transaction alerts
Enable the bank's available purchase and withdrawal notifications, and review them alongside your transaction history. If one category is growing too quickly, adjust it before the end of the month. Alerts are helpful, but delivery is not guaranteed.
4. Review subscriptions monthly
List recurring services, check their renewal dates and cancel ones you no longer use through the provider's cancellation process. Where supported, a virtual card with an appropriate limit can help manage exposure and spending.
Reducing a virtual-card limit or blocking a card does not itself cancel the service or erase amounts you owe.
5. If money is running short
Protect food and other essential needs first. Reduce optional entertainment and unused services, review upcoming bills and seek appropriate support if essentials are unaffordable. Do not solve a shortfall by going hungry or assuming that expensive borrowing is the answer.
A workable monthly routine
Use clear categories, check transactions regularly and choose payment methods with costs you understand. The aim is a budget you can maintain, rather than a rigid rule that does not match your circumstances.
