Balıkesir: Aegean Beaches, Marmara Shores and Mount Ida

Location and character

Balıkesir province reaches both the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Its inland provincial capital, coastal towns, islands and mountain landscapes offer very different experiences, so choose your base according to the part of the province you want to explore. The city of Balıkesir itself is inland.

Coast and countryside

  • Cunda Island: cobbled streets, historic stone houses and seafood restaurants make it a popular stop near Ayvalık.
  • Kazdağı / the Kaz Mountains: also known as Mount Ida, this mountain area offers forest scenery and routes around the national park. Check access arrangements for the particular trail or protected area you plan to visit.
  • Ayvalık: explore its historic streets and Greek architectural heritage, then spend time by the coast.
  • Olive-growing hills: the countryside around Ayvalık and Edremit is well suited to a slower journey through villages and olive groves. Allow time to visit a producer or stop in a village along the way.

History and heritage

Ayvalık's old town preserves an important part of the area's architectural history. In Balıkesir city, Zağnos Paşa Mosque is a major Ottoman landmark. The Kuva-yi Milliye Museum brings together the story of the National Struggle and archaeological and ethnographic collections, giving context to the region's ancient and more recent past.

Local food

Try Ayvalık tostu, the area’s distinctive toasted sandwich. Coastal menus often feature sardines and other seafood, while olive oil, local cheeses and honey are useful introductions to the province's agricultural produce.

Getting there and getting around

Road access from Istanbul and İzmir depends heavily on your destination: Balıkesir city, Ayvalık and Edremit are not interchangeable arrival points. Allow for traffic and check the full route rather than relying on a single province-wide journey time.

If travelling by rail, check the current TCDD timetable and the station and connections for your destination. Balıkesir Koca Seyit Airport serves the Edremit Gulf area, so include the onward transfer when comparing flights and road travel. Routes and flight availability can change.

Planning your visit

  • May to September suits many coastal trips; spring and early autumn can be more comfortable for walking.
  • A stone-house stay on Cunda can work well for an island-focused visit.
  • Allow time for an Ayvalık sunset and a visit to olive-growing villages.
  • Give the Kaz Mountains their own outing, with a route and access arrangements suited to your group.

The province's two sea coasts are a useful reminder of its variety: a Marmara break, an Aegean holiday and an inland heritage visit need different itineraries.
