Çanakkale: Troy, the Dardanelles and Gallipoli History
Location and character
Çanakkale city stands on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles in north-western Türkiye. The wider province extends across both sides of the strait, bringing together ancient sites, First World War history and coastal landscapes. The Dardanelles connects the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara and remains central to the area's identity. The Gallipoli campaign of 1915
The Ottoman defence of the Dardanelles against the Allied campaign was a defining episode of the First World War and holds an important place in modern Turkish history. The naval attempt to force the strait was repelled, followed by a land campaign on the Gallipoli peninsula.Mustafa Kemal, later Atatürk, played a major role as an Ottoman commander in the land campaign. Memorials, cemeteries and annual commemorations preserve the memory of those who died and help visitors understand the scale of the fighting.
Historic places to visit
- Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial: a major memorial overlooking the sea on the Gallipoli peninsula.
- Ancient Troy: the archaeological site associated with the Trojan legends and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its surviving layers tell a story much broader than the famous horse.
- The Dardanelles: enjoy the waterfront and, when services and conditions allow, a ferry crossing to appreciate the relationship between the two shores.
- Kilitbahir Castle: an Ottoman fortification built under Mehmed II to help control and defend the strait.
Coast and outdoor activities
The province includes Aegean beaches and coastal destinations on the Gallipoli peninsula. In the city, add Aynalı Çarşı, the historic covered bazaar, to a sightseeing walk.Diving and boat outings are options in the wider area, with access, operator requirements and weather determining what is possible. Choose activities and swimming locations according to current conditions.
Food
Seafood is a natural focus for a coastal meal. You may find mullet and mussel dishes, alongside desserts such as helva and künefe. For a distinctly local sweet, look for Çanakkale peynir helvası, a cheese dessert. A harbour-side dinner around sunset is a relaxed way to end the day.Culture and events
Troy-themed cultural events and local music and arts programmes reflect Çanakkale's modern cultural life. Check the current programme before planning around a named film or flower festival, as titles and annual schedules can change.Planning your visit
- May to September is a useful window for coastal visits, with hotter and busier periods in summer.
- Visit Troy Museum for the region's archaeological collections and allow time for the nearby ancient site.
- The horse used in the film Troy stands on Çanakkale’s city waterfront. There is also a wooden horse replica at the ancient site; allow time for these separate stops if they interest you.
- Allow a full day for a considered visit to Gallipoli's battlefields, memorials and cemeteries.
- Make time for the old waterfront's cafés in the evening.
About the name: Çanakkale is associated with the words for earthenware bowls or vessels and a castle, reflecting the area’s pottery and fortifications.
