Türkiye's National Football Teams and International Competitions
Turkish football extends beyond its clubs and domestic leagues. Several national sides represent the country: the senior men's team, youth teams at under-21, under-19 and under-17 level, and the women's national teams. Age-group and Olympic football also form part of the wider international picture, although an Olympic place must be earned.
This guide explains the teams, their main competitions, how squads are selected, and practical ways to follow fixtures and results from inside Türkiye or abroad.
The team's role
The senior men's national team represents Turkish football on the world stage. Its programme includes World Cup and EURO qualification, the finals when it qualifies, the UEFA Nations League and international friendlies.
The main competitions and match periods
- European qualifying for the FIFA World Cup.
- Qualification for the UEFA European Championship, commonly called the EURO.
- The Nations League and international friendly matches, generally organised around the international match calendar. A FIFA international break is a scheduling window, rather than a competition in itself.
How players are selected
The head coach normally announces a squad before each international window. Selection takes account of club form in Türkiye or abroad, fitness and injuries, and the balance between experienced players and emerging talent.
Youth internationals help prepare future senior players physically and tactically, while giving them experience beyond domestic club football.
The under-21 team
- It competes in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification.
- It is an important final development stage before senior international football, although progression is not automatic.
- Many senior players have come through this level.
The under-19 and under-17 teams
- They take part in the corresponding UEFA European youth competitions.
- International tournaments teach players to deal with travel, crowd pressure and different footballing styles.
- Scouting draws on Turkish clubs and academies, and can also include eligible players from Turkish communities elsewhere in Europe.
Olympic football needs to be distinguished from a permanently qualified Turkish under-23 side. In Europe, the men's Olympic qualification route is linked to the UEFA Under-21 Championship, with any necessary Olympic play-off governed by the relevant edition's rules. Türkiye can take part in the Olympic finals only if it qualifies.
The men's Olympic tournament generally uses an under-23 age limit and allows up to three over-age players, under that edition's eligibility rules. A qualified squad can therefore combine younger players with two or three experienced senior internationals; using every over-age place is not compulsory.
Separate regional tournaments or friendlies may use under-23 teams, but their eligibility and participation rules must be checked individually. They should not be confused with Olympic qualification or treated as evidence of a confirmed Olympic place.
The senior women's team
- Competes in Women's World Cup qualification.
- Competes in Women's EURO qualification.
Girls' and women's age-group teams
The under-19 and under-17 teams help develop the women's game and provide a pathway towards senior and professional football for girls in Türkiye. Follow women’s fixtures and squads separately from the men’s calendar; their international dates can differ.
World Cup qualification
Türkiye competes in UEFA's European qualifying system. Groups generally involve home-and-away matches; group winners qualify directly under the applicable format, with play-offs providing a further route for eligible teams. The precise allocation and play-off rules depend on the World Cup cycle.
The European Championship
The EURO is one of the leading continental tournaments. Türkiye's memorable campaigns in 2000 and 2008 helped establish the ambition to qualify consistently for subsequent editions.
The UEFA Nations League
The competition creates more structured, competitive international fixtures in place of some friendlies. Teams play in leagues determined by the competition's format and results, with promotion and relegation between levels.
Youth and Olympic competitions
These include UEFA's under-21, under-19 and under-17 championships. European men's Olympic places are determined through the designated qualifying route associated with the under-21 competition, rather than an assumed stand-alone Turkish U23 qualifying campaign.
Use a few dependable sources to organise your viewing, rather than searching separately for every match.
The Turkish Football Federation, TFF
The official federation site carries forthcoming fixtures, previous results and official squad announcements and call-ups.
UEFA
Its team and competition pages cover European World Cup qualifying, EURO qualification and finals, and the U21, U19 and U17 competitions. The 2027 Under-21 tournament guide sets out that edition’s finals format, dates and participants.
Sports apps
Services such as Sofascore, 365Scores and Flashscore let you follow Türkiye as a favourite and receive fixture, starting-line-up and live-score alerts. Check that you have selected the correct senior, women's or youth team, as their schedules differ.
Turkish broadcasters
Official match announcements normally identify the kick-off time in Türkiye, the stadium, the broadcaster and the relevant viewing route. Check the specific fixture instead of assuming one channel shows every national-team match.
The familiar men's calendar through 2025 included separate windows in March, June, September, October and November. FIFA’s calendar changes that pattern from 2026: March, June and November remain, while late September and early October form one combined 16-day, four-match window. The exact dates and any tournament-specific arrangements should be checked for the year concerned.
Players join their national squads during the applicable release periods, while many senior domestic competitions pause. Women's and youth calendars, and leagues with different scheduling arrangements, should be checked separately.
Friendlies provide preparation before tournaments or during a qualifying cycle. Coaches use them to assess new players and test tactical ideas, as well as to improve the team's readiness.
- Visitors: a trip might include a Türkiye international in a city such as Istanbul or Ankara, when the published fixture and venue allow it.
- Residents: following the national team offers another connection with everyday sporting life in Türkiye.
- Followers of European football: watching Türkiye provides a perspective beyond the most regularly discussed international powers.
With this overview, you can distinguish the national sides and follow their international programmes in an organised way through official websites, sports apps and Turkish broadcasters.
