Türkiye’s PGL 2026–2027: The Amateur Route to Professional Football and Promotion Play-offs

Does winning an amateur group secure a place in professional football? In PGL, finishing first alone is not enough. This guide explains Profesyonelliğe Geçiş Ligi in 2026–2027, its links to provincial football and 3. Lig, and the route to six promotion places. Information was reviewed on 28 October 2026; this is a season-format guide, not live results or confirmation that any club has been promoted.

⁦1️⃣⁩ PGL and the former BAL name

PGL stands for Profesyonelliğe Geçiş Ligi, the league for transition to professional football. TFF adopted this name in place of Bölgesel Amatör Lig, or BAL, from 2026–2027. Do not count the two names as parallel competitions: BAL may remain in an archive or an older page title on the federation site.

The statute identifies PGL as Türkiye’s highest amateur league. It sits below 3. Lig, the lowest professional division, and above the qualifying provincial route. PGL membership does not automatically make a club professional; reaching the next division requires sporting success and satisfaction of competition and registration conditions.

The season uses 12 regional groups playing home and away. Each has its own table and race. A combined national points ranking does not allocate professional places, so identify your club’s group before reading its position or fixtures.

⁦2️⃣⁩ Find the right club and fixture

Open TFF’s PGL programme, select 2026–2027 and the group. An older page title may still say BAL; match the competition and season displayed within the programme. Then choose the round and match record rather than relying on a general search result bearing the club’s name.

For example, the first group when checked included Akdeniz Belediyespor, Mersin Karacailyas Spor, Ceyhan 1967 and Nizipspor. These establish examples of group membership; they are neither rankings nor a complete list across all twelve groups.

Keep the full Turkish name, group and province. Similar names or municipal associations do not establish that a team is a professional club’s reserve side. Cup games and friendlies also remain separate from a PGL round, even when the same opponents meet.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Why first place does not mean direct promotion

The top four in each group qualify for its play-offs. Third hosts fourth in a single first-round match. The winner visits the second-placed club for another single match. That winner then visits the group leader in a third-round match.

The leader therefore gains a shorter route and hosts an important deciding game, rather than receiving automatic professional status. One winner from each group reaches the final stage. The twelve clubs are paired by draw at the centre designated by TFF, with six single-match winners promoted to 3. Lig subject to the requirements.

Drawn knockout matches go to two 15-minute extra-time periods and penalties if still level. As an illustration, fourth must overcome third, second and first before the final qualifying match. The leader begins against the winner of the preceding two rounds.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Relegation and the provincial route into PGL

The bottom four in each group are relegated to the local Süper Amatör Lig: 48 clubs under the season statute. This is separate from the six promotion places into professional football. Fourth from the top is not fourth from the bottom.

Provincial Süper Amatör clubs approach PGL through promotion groups and quotas determined by TFF following the relevant organisational opinion. The system provides for 24 clubs to progress from those groups, subject to the criteria. A local championship alone does not establish completed PGL admission.

The deadline for notifying Süper Amatör entrants to this promotion-group route is 26 April 2027. Clubs relegated from 3. Lig do not affect the provincial quota. There is also a possible admission route for the highest-performing local club in a province without representation in the listed national divisions, subject to the appropriate opinion and TFF board decision; it is not an automatic entitlement.

⁦5️⃣⁩ What young players and families should know

PGL has specific youth-player requirements and prohibits foreign players from playing in 2026–2027. Acceptance for training therefore does not establish eligibility for an official squad. A foreign-player rule from a provincial division should not be transferred to PGL.

The match list must include at least five players born in 2006 or later, with three starting and playing the first half. A first-half substitution of one requires a player in the same age category; the three-player fielding requirement does not continue into the second half. Players born in 2012 or later cannot play.

These are team requirements, not a guarantee of minutes for every age-eligible applicant. Ask about birth year, licensing, registration, suspensions, role, training, travel and written costs. Official participation requires confirmation from the club and competent registration authority, rather than payment to a football school alone.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Read points before announcing an outcome

Track the club within its own group, comparing games played, points and any deductions. If the total differs from the wins-and-draws calculation, inspect the deduction and relevant decision rather than inventing an explanation. A dash against an upcoming fixture is not a goalless draw.

For two level clubs, the statute starts with head-to-head points and then head-to-head goal difference, without away-goal preference, before further criteria. Overall goal difference alone is not the whole test. A temporary table display should not be treated as a final ruling before the necessary information is complete.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Visiting and following the season practically

Before travelling, match the date, kick-off and stadium to the latest programme and host announcement. TFF can change timing and location; a club may use a different approved ground. Choose a game with manageable outward and return travel, then check spectator instructions, entrance and access.

Ask whether that fixture has a ticket or registration requirement, its price and conditions. Amateur status does not establish free admission. No verified universal tariff is supplied here, and a club’s competition participation fee is neither a supporter’s ticket price nor an individual player’s joining charge.

For remote viewing, check the authorised match-specific broadcast announcement. For continuing follow-up, save the group and programme and watch the club’s position around the top and bottom four. Keeping the regular season and each play-off stage separate prevents an early victory being mistaken for completed promotion.

⁦8️⃣⁩ Common questions

Are BAL and PGL separate competitions this season?
PGL replaced the BAL name from 2026–2027. Check the season when using archives.

Does the group leader go straight into professional football?
No. It must win its group deciding stage and the final qualifying match for 3. Lig.

How many PGL clubs go up to 3. Lig?
Six under the 2026–2027 statute, subject to the required criteria.

Does a provincial Süper Amatör champion enter PGL automatically?
Check its provincial quota, promotion groups and final approval; the title alone is insufficient.

Do the youth rules guarantee selection for every player born in 2006?
No. They regulate team lists and selection; licensing, eligibility and the coach’s decision still apply.
