Halfeti and the Euphrates landscape reshaped by Birecik Dam.
Halfeti offers a different day from Şanlıurfa's archaeological outings: water, scenery and a boat trip take centre stage. Birecik Dam transformed the area, submerging parts of the old settlement. Head to old Halfeti by the water and confirm the departure point, as the new district is not the same place as the excursion jetty.
When choosing a map location or booking a car, specify Eski Halfeti, then identify the jetty or establishment by name. Surviving stone buildings and waterside façades give the area its character, while many residents moved elsewhere as the water rose.
Begin with a short waterfront walk and a break, then decide on a boat after assessing the weather and options. Allow for waiting rather than tying the excursion to a tight onward connection.
Routes vary by operator. They may head towards Savaşan village and its minaret rising from the water, or towards Rumkale. Ask about the actual route, length and whether there is a stop ashore or viewing from the boat only.
Rumkale belongs to Gaziantep province on the other side of this river landscape. Departing from Halfeti does not change its administrative location or guarantee that landing at the fortress is permitted.
A documentary photograph of boats and riverside facilities in Halfeti; check operations when visiting.
Confirm whether the price is per person or for a private boat, and whether a meal or extra charges apply. Ask about departure and return times, seating, shade and arrangements for children.
Wind and operating conditions can alter trips. Attractive photographs from a calm day do not establish that every hour is suitable for sailing or that every route always operates.
Choose a seat with a view without standing at the boat's edge, and follow the crew's lifejacket instructions. For a group with older visitors, check boarding ease and the step between jetty and boat before paying.
Take water and sun protection and keep a secure hold on your phone when photographing. The waterfront can be enjoyable without a boat if the weather is unsuitable or the trip would be too long for children.
Halfeti is known for its dark roses, but flowering depends on the season and the grower. Add a nursery or growing site only after confirming visitor reception. Choose a meal after checking the menu and prices.
Keep the day flexible and allow for the journey from Urfa and back. Combining Halfeti with Birecik may fit your route, but requires extra time; avoid squeezing it into the same day as Harran and Göbeklitepe.
