A documentary view of Karahantepe, one of the Taş Tepeler project sites.
Karahantepe is part of Taş Tepeler, a project investigating Neolithic communities in the Şanlıurfa area. An active research and excavation site in the Tek Tek Mountains, it requires more planning than a city museum, particularly if you hope to see specific areas pictured in photographs.
1.
A distinct site from Göbeklitepe
Discoveries include buildings partly cut into bedrock, stone pillars, communal facilities and domestic structures. Systematic excavations began in 2019, investigating relationships between architecture, everyday life and social change in this early period.
Similarities in some symbols do not make the sites identical. Take time to understand each layout rather than expecting Karahantepe to reproduce Göbeklitepe's visitor walkways.
On 25 August 2026, the ministry announced a composite sculpture discovered during the excavation season. About 70 centimetres high, it depicts a person seated on a leopard’s back. The announcement highlights continuing research and new discoveries; it does not establish that the object or the building where it was found can be visited.
The culture ministry’s photograph of the composite sculpture announced in 2026; its findspot is not necessarily accessible to visitors.
2.
Confirm access before setting off
The official museum listing publishes visiting hours, but the status badge shown when you check may reflect the time of day or admission arrangements. The badge alone does not establish continuing access or a long-term closure. Contact the site or Şanlıurfa museum administration before travelling to confirm admission for your date and the route available.
A photograph or news about a visitor centre does not prove that every facility is operating today. Excavation and preparation work can affect arrangements.
Details of the Karahantepe excavations; research areas can be viewed only from authorised routes.
| Before departure | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Visitor admission | Is admission available on your date, and during which hours? |
| Site route | Which areas may be entered or viewed from the walkways? |
| Transport | The correct entrance, driver waiting time and return journey |
| Facilities | Water, rest stops and services actually available |
3.
A separate journey beyond the city
The site lies towards the Tek Tek Mountains, rather than along a walking route between central Urfa's sights. Locate the correct Karahantepe entrance and arrange the return journey in advance. When combining archaeological sites, calculate road time between them rather than only their distances from the city.
Bring water and other essentials before leaving serviced areas. Do not assume that a restaurant or return transport will be available near the excavations, and arrange for your vehicle to wait if needed.
4.
Viewing archaeology without entering excavations
When visits are permitted, stay on the route designated by staff. Rock-cut hollows and ancient walls are not seats or shortcuts. A short distance may still be out of bounds to protect discoveries.
The photographs document the site rather than promise access to the same angles. Use the available interpretation to understand buildings' functions, keeping questions of dating and meaning grounded in research.
5.
An alternative if access is unavailable
Keep the day flexible. If admission cannot be confirmed, choose Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum or Göbeklitepe after checking its visiting status, rather than making a long journey in search of an entrance on your own.
Taş Tepeler is the name of a project encompassing several sites; access to one does not establish access to the others.
| Option | When it works | What to check |

| Karahantepe | After admission and the route have been confirmed | Admission arrangements and transport outside the city |
| Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum | A city alternative for understanding regional archaeology | Current hours and the entrance location |
| Göbeklitepe | A separate alternative archaeological outing | Access, hours and the route to the site |
