Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum introduces the region's history and Neolithic sites.
Şanlıurfa's museums help make sense of the sites you visit beyond the city. The archaeology museum traces successive cultures and excavated finds, while Haleplibahçe offers a different experience through mosaics. They occupy the same museum district but are separate buildings; plan for a visit to each.
Begin with the galleries explaining the Neolithic, then follow the chronology. Highlights associated with the museum include the Urfa Man statue, finds from regional sites and a display that helps visitors visualise Göbeklitepe's structures. Read about each object before moving to the next.
With children, give a limited number of galleries your attention. A simple question about a tool or statue may be more engaging than passing every exhibit without understanding it.
Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum preserves mosaics discovered on the site, alongside other displayed material. View them from the designated walkways, focusing on hunting scenes, ornament and figures, including the Amazons and Orpheus. The size and arrangement of the small stones are part of their artistry.
Follow photography rules and permitted distances. Do not touch a mosaic or cross a barrier for a closer photograph: conservation makes continued display possible.

Both official museum pages list visits as available. Nevertheless, check the day's hours and last entry before leaving, particularly around seasonal changes or evening programmes. Summer hours that ran until 1 October do not automatically continue for the rest of the year.
Ask which ticket is appropriate and what it includes. Conditions for citizens' and residents' cards do not necessarily apply to foreign tourists or every member of your group.
Allow a relaxed half-day for both museums, with a break between them. Start with archaeology if your plans include Göbeklitepe or Karahantepe; their symbols and pillars may be clearer when you subsequently see them at the sites.
With limited time, choose according to your interests. Mosaics provide a focused experience, while archaeology suits those wanting to follow Urfa's history through several periods.
The museum district is near Balıklıgöl, but proximity does not remove the fatigue of standing and walking through galleries. Take a break before an outdoor walk and check routes suitable for pushchairs or anyone needing to avoid steps.
When arranging a driver, name the museum precisely: “Urfa Museum” alone may not make clear which entrance you need.
