Balıklıgöl in central Şanlıurfa is a convenient starting point for an old-town walk.
Şanlıurfa combines stone-built neighbourhoods, religious places and traditional markets. On a first visit, start at Balıklıgöl and explore its surroundings at an easy pace. This is an old-town itinerary; Göbeklitepe, Harran and Halfeti require separate journeys and more time.
Known as the fish-pool district, the area includes Halilürrahman and Aynzeliha pools and neighbouring mosques and arcades. Walk beside the water, then look more closely at Rızvaniye Mosque's architecture rather than stopping only for a quick pool photograph. Morning or the cooler hours later in the day suit a comfortable walk.
Include a short break nearby and time to look and photograph. Allow around two to three hours for the area and surroundings, depending on crowds and mosque access.
Local tradition associates the place with the Prophet Abraham and attributes a nearby cave to him. This is a religious and cultural tradition rather than archaeological proof of where an event occurred. Read the interpretation and appreciate the site's significance while keeping it distinct from excavation evidence.
Respect prayer times, remove shoes and follow dress requirements in mosques. Ask before photographing visitors, and follow instructions concerning the fish and cave.
An evening view of Balıklıgöl and its surrounding historic architecture.
From the pools, continue towards the trading lanes around Haşimiye. Choose a short walk with stops rather than trying to cover every street at once. The markets offer copperware, spices and local products.
Before a gift is wrapped, confirm its weight, material and price. Differences between copperware prices may reflect size and manufacturing method, so compare more than appearance alone.
Urfa Castle rises above the district, but climbing to it is not automatically part of every visit. Check the entrance, permitted route and restoration work that day. Its silhouette remains part of the scene even if the climb is unavailable.
For anyone who finds steps tiring, the pools and markets with regular breaks can be enough. Reaching a high photographic viewpoint is not a requirement for enjoying the city.
Choose accommodation with convenient old-town access and confirm a vehicle drop-off point before entering the lanes. For the return, send the driver a clear location beside an accessible street, as vehicles cannot necessarily reach every doorway.
Begin with the pools, continue to a mosque and the market, and finish with a local meal. Give the nearby museums a separate part of the day so that the visit remains more than a hurried series of transfers.
