1.
Northern İzmir: industry, coast and history
Northern İzmir offers a different perspective on the province: urban expansion in Menemen, industry and logistics in Aliağa, seaside life in Foça and Dikili, and World Heritage in Bergama. Each destination has its own character. Some suit work and everyday living; others reward a coastal break or a dedicated archaeological visit.
| Area | Main interest | Planning point |
|---|---|---|
| Menemen and Aliağa | Work, commuting and everyday services | Calculate the actual commute and İZBAN connection |
| Eski and Yeni Foça | Harbours, lanes and the beach | Choose the intended town centre and check the return service |
| Dikili, Bademli and Çandarlı | Beaches and bays | Allow for the approach to your chosen bay and summer traffic |
| Bergama | Archaeology and museums | Choose open sites; the Red Basilica remains closed until work is completed |
2.
Menemen: the northern gateway
Menemen links central İzmir with the north. İZBAN and major roads have supported residential growth and commuting. Its main characteristics include:
- Relatively convenient İZBAN connections towards central İzmir and Aliağa.
- New residential areas alongside agricultural towns and villages.
- A longstanding association with farming, traditional pottery and local markets.
3.
Aliağa: industry and ports
Aliağa is an important western Turkish centre for steel, petrochemicals, energy, ports and maritime industry. It particularly suits people working in industry and logistics, with everyday services and transport connections to Menemen and İzmir.
Visitors may pass through towards Yeni Şakran, Foça, Dikili or Bergama. Industrial facilities require permission to enter; observe any restrictions on photography.

4.
Foça: harbours and maritime identity
Eski Foça and Yeni Foça have separate centres, beaches and atmospheres. Eski Foça is known for its harbour, boats, seafood restaurants and historic streets. Yeni Foça offers beaches and summer accommodation and can feel quieter at certain times.
- Walk around Eski Foça's harbour at sunset.
- Explore narrow streets, stone buildings and historic fortifications.
- Take a licensed boat trip around the bays and islands.
- Visit Yeni Foça's beaches and bays along the coastal road.
5.
Dikili and Çandarlı: beaches and towns
Dikili has a long waterfront and open beaches, becoming livelier in summer. Bademli is known for clear-water bays, while Çandarlı combines a beach, historic castle and seafront restaurants. They can suit visitors seeking a calmer break than the largest resorts, although summer weekends bring crowds and higher accommodation prices. Book ahead during busy periods.
Remains at Bergama's acropolis. The Red Basilica is a separate site with its own closure restriction.
6.
Bergama: heritage and visitor access
Bergama preserves Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers. Pergamon and its Multi-Layered Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A core visit includes:
- Pergamon's acropolis and steep ancient theatre.
- The Asklepion, a renowned ancient healing sanctuary.
- The Red Basilica: closed to visitors since 24 January 2025 for site landscaping until the work is completed. Consider an exterior view where permitted, and focus the sightseeing programme on the acropolis, Asklepion and Bergama Museum.
- Bergama Museum, historic neighbourhoods and markets.
7.
Getting around northern İzmir
- Train: İZBAN serves Menemen and Aliağa and is useful from central İzmir.
- Bus: municipal and regional services link Foça, Dikili and Bergama; frequencies can vary by season.
- Car: useful for bays, villages and combining several destinations.
- Within coastal towns: walk or use local buses and taxis for shorter journeys.
8.
A one- to three-day itinerary
| Time available | Suggested route | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| One day | Foça for the coast and walking, or Bergama for archaeology | Trying to rush Foça, Bergama and Dikili in one outing |
| Two days | Eski and Yeni Foça, followed by Bergama | Sacrificing time at archaeological sites for extra transfers |
| Three days | Foça, then Dikili with Bademli or Çandarlı, then Bergama | Adding distant bays without allowing for the return journey |
9.
Choosing accommodation
- Foça: seaside atmosphere, restaurants and evening walks.
- Dikili or Bademli: beaches and family holidays.
- Bergama: heritage and unhurried archaeological visits.
- Aliağa or Menemen: practical bases for work and commuting.
10.
Practical advice
- Check museum and site opening times and admission prices before visiting.
- Allow for substantial distances between northern destinations.
- Book ahead for July, August and summer weekends.
- Expect occasional strong winds on the Foça and Dikili coasts.
- Follow forest-protection rules and summer restrictions on lighting fires.
- Consider a car when remote bays, villages or Bademli are central to your plans.
