A concise review of domestic and international developments

1️⃣ Domestic affairs: economy and prices

• Inflation: January 2026 figures, released on 3 February, showed a slight further easing in annual inflation to 30.65%. This remained part of the economic discussion during the week covered here.
• What did this mean for residents and visitors? Sustained disinflation could gradually ease price pressures, but a lower annual rate did not mean lower prices. Monthly inflation in January rose to 4.84%. With annual inflation around 30%, the effects on everyday spending remained substantial.

2️⃣ Children’s use of social media

• As earlier context, Parliament reported on 13 January 2026 that its Child Rights Subcommittee had discussed and adopted a draft report, with debate over age restrictions and safer content. Adopting a committee report does not itself enact a law, and should not be treated as proof of a night-time ban or final obligations for users.
• Why did it matter? A resulting legal framework could change registration, age verification and advertising policies, and introduce penalties or other measures for platforms or service providers.

3️⃣ International affairs: regional diplomacy

• The visit programme published by the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications placed Erdoğan’s Saudi Arabia visit on 3 February and Egypt visit on 4 February 2026. Although they preceded this review week, their regional-stability agenda remained relevant to the discussion.
• Why did it matter? Regional de-escalation and cooperation could influence trade, investment, travel and employment opportunities, depending on subsequent implementation.
