Winter 2026: Türkiye's Mountains Welcome Skiers and Snowboarders
The arrival of the 2025–2026 winter season brought renewed interest in Türkiye's mountain resorts, with snow sports and winter holidays at the centre of the early-season outlook. Hopes for an exceptionally busy tourism and sporting season were expectations, rather than a confirmed record. This guide looks at the main destinations and the events to check when planning a visit.
Uludağ, near Bursa, is one of Türkiye's established winter-sports destinations, combining ski slopes with hotels and a lively resort atmosphere. It appeals to experienced skiers and newcomers alike.
Cable-car access and floodlit skiing are part of the practical planning questions: check the operating lift network, the slopes actually open for night skiing and their hours before travelling. Claims of a specific cable-car upgrade and an expansion of night-skiing runs for 2025–2026 were not confirmed in the dated official material reviewed in October 2026, so late-night skiing should not be assumed across the resort.
Palandöken, Erzurum: Known for long, demanding runs and its appeal to experienced skiers and snowboarders. Official tourism information describes a run of around 12 km and emphasises its gradient and length; it does not establish a claim to Europe's longest or steepest ski runs. International snowboard competition was a genuine part of the 2026 season: the FIS organiser invitation scheduled the Snowboard Cross World Cup for 6–8 March 2026 in Palandöken/Erzurum. The preliminary programme allowed changes for snow conditions and jury decisions; the official event record shows subsequent adjustments to some race dates.
Mount Erciyes, Kayseri: A major winter-sports centre with modern lift infrastructure and facilities for ski and snowboard instruction. Check dated federation and resort announcements for its local competition programme. The general claim of local freestyle championships and thousands of visitors every week was not verified as a specific 2026 event or weekly attendance statistic.
Türkiye's winter resorts host sporting competitions as well as holidaymakers. Federation calendars distinguish Alpine skiing, snowboard, cross-country and other disciplines, so the event name, venue and final dates matter when planning around a race.
The season preview also mentioned a January 2026 “Anatolian Winter Cup” bringing together leading skiers from Türkiye and Eastern Europe. No dated official confirmation for that named event was located in the October 2026 review; it should not be treated as a confirmed tournament or used as the basis for a booking. The verified FIS Palandöken event above provides a documented example of Türkiye's international winter-sports programme.
Türkiye can offer an alternative mountain holiday to the Alps, but the experience depends on the chosen resort, conditions and facilities rather than a blanket comparison.
Some travellers combine skiing with a thermal-spa visit, known locally as a termal experience. Bursa's wider region, for example, has established thermal destinations. Check their location and transport separately: a ski-resort hotel does not automatically have natural hot springs, and a spa visit may involve a journey away from the slopes. This can be a relaxing addition to a sporting holiday without making a medical claim.
