🛒 Sales and Turnover in Türkiye: Separating Price Increases from Activity Growth in 2026

A shop may report higher sales while selling fewer items. There is no contradiction: sales value depends on prices, quantities and the mix of products. The problem arises when a rise in money received becomes a story about higher real consumption without examining the volume index. Turkish statistics distinguish turnover indices, trade sales volume and retail sales volume. Each answers a particular question.

📅 This 2026 guide explains how to read official tables. It offers neither shopping advice nor forecasts of shop profits. All numerical examples are hypothetical teaching exercises. The aim is to separate value from volume, identify the activity, period and adjustment, and compare indicators without automatically subtracting general inflation from every sales figure.

💡 1. What does turnover mean?

In these tables, the Turkish term Ciro means the value of goods and services sold during the reference period, as defined by the index. It does not mean inventory turnover, employee turnover or net profit. Read the metadata to see which amounts are included and excluded, particularly when moving from sector statistics to a company's financial statements.

Imagine a business sells goods worth one million units, with goods costs and other expenses of 950,000. Its sales value is one million, but the simplified difference before other factors is 50,000. If sales rise to 1.2 million while costs rise to 1.19 million, sales increase while that simplified result falls to 10,000. The example shows why higher turnover alone cannot establish that a sector has become more profitable or has stronger liquidity.

📈 2. Value, volume and the number of items

A value index tracks amounts at current prices. A volume measure removes price effects according to its methodology to reveal changes in activity. Statistical volume is not necessarily a count of identical items. A shop selling food, appliances and clothing requires appropriate methods and weights to combine different products; adding a carton of milk and a washing machine as two equivalent units would not measure its sales volume meaningfully.

In a simple example, a shop sells 100 items at ten units each, producing sales of 1,000. It then sells 90 items at 15 each, generating 1,350. Sales value rises by 35% while the quantity falls by 10%. Strong monetary growth can therefore accompany pressure on quantities. These are hypothetical figures, not actual rates for Türkiye. They illustrate the question to ask when reading a sales column.

🛒 3. Retail is only part of trade

The broader trade sector includes activities beyond direct sales to households. TÜİK's documents distinguish motor vehicle trade, wholesale and retail, with separate breakdowns. The retail sales volume measure in this group excludes motor vehicles and motorcycles under its published definition. An increase in total trade should not be described as an identical increase in household purchases.

Choose the row that matches the question. For a story about retail shops, start with retail and its subgroups; for wholesale activity, open the wholesale series. Wholesalers may sell to businesses for production or resale rather than to final consumers. Do not add subsector growth rates arithmetically or compare an individual shop with total trade without explaining the difference in coverage. An economic classification describes the statistical activity, rather than simply reproducing a company's marketing name.

🛒 4. How are price effects removed?

The official methodology derives sales volume indices from turnover values adjusted with price information suited to the activity's components. Retail uses consumer price indices and appropriate average price data, while other activities require different price groups. Subtracting the headline inflation rate from sales growth is therefore insufficient to calculate the official volume figure.

Suppose sales value rises by 20% and the relevant prices by 10%. The simplified volume calculation is 1.20 divided by 1.10, minus one: approximately 9.09%, rather than 10%. The difference comes from how proportional changes combine. Even this simplified calculation cannot replace the official method for multiple products. Use the published volume result where available and retain the exercise only to explain the principle. One household's inflation experience or one product's price is not a deflator for an entire sector.

🧭 5. Record the series details before comparing figures

Write down six details before reading the figures: the index name, activity, data month, unit, reference year and adjustment. A reading of 150 in an index labelled 2021=100 does not mean sales of TRY 150 million. Nor does it mean annual growth of 50%: that comparison is with the reference level, whereas annual growth compares with the corresponding month of the preceding year.

If a hypothetical index stands at 150 and was 140 a year earlier, its annual increase is approximately 7.14%. A previous month's reading of 148 creates a different comparison, for which the appropriate adjusted series must be selected. Use a precise label such as “retail sales volume; adjusted monthly change; specified month”, then record the value. Keep the index name in the note: a number without a name, period and unit cannot be checked reliably, however clear it looks in a screenshot.

📅 6. Monthly comparisons, annual comparisons and holidays

Sales are affected by seasons, working days, holidays and promotions. For a comparison with the previous month, read the seasonally and calendar adjusted series. For an annual comparison, check the adjustment stated in the release. Some holidays move between months from one year to another, so matching month names does not explain every difference in unadjusted levels.

Imagine an unadjusted index rises from 120 to 130 through several influences, while its adjusted counterpart rises from 125 to 126. Do not use the larger unadjusted jump to describe an equally large underlying monthly improvement without explaining seasonal effects. Equally, adjustment does not mean the recorded unadjusted sales never occurred. It is a tool for comparison, while the raw series describes the recorded movement under its definition. Label both measures explicitly rather than placing them beneath one ambiguous heading.

🛒 7. The product mix can change the average invoice

Average invoice value may rise because a shop sells more expensive products or customers change their mix of purchases, even if no individual product becomes dearer. It may fall when customers switch to cheaper alternatives. Analysing value, volume and prices requires distinguishing these possibilities rather than simply declaring that everything became more expensive.

In a hypothetical scenario, a shop sells 50 items at ten units and 50 at 30, giving sales of 2,000. It then sells 80 of the first product and 20 of the second at unchanged prices, generating 1,400 while still selling 100 items. The average price per item changes because the mix changes. This is not a reconstruction of the official index; it illustrates why an average invoice is not a pure price measure. Open the published subgroups and examine the activity's composition before generalizing.

💰 8. What can retail tell us about household demand?

Retail sales volume is useful for following part of demand, but it does not cover all household spending on services, housing and activities outside its scope. Nor does it directly show how purchases are distributed among households or financed. Higher sales volume could accompany the use of savings or credit, or a change in the number of buyers. The index alone cannot distinguish these explanations.

For a story about living standards, include appropriate income, price and labour data instead of using retail volume as a substitute for all three. To explain tourist demand at a local shop, look for local evidence: the national aggregate does not automatically identify buyers' nationality or city. You can describe activity in the retail sector, then explain that household purchasing power requires additional information. These boundaries make the story more useful rather than diminishing the indicator's value.

🛒 9. Industrial and services turnover are different measures

TÜİK publishes turnover indices for several activities. Industry, services and trade each have their own coverage. They are not three independent estimates of household consumption that can be added together. Some sales take place between businesses, some services serve businesses, and coverage can differ from the services sector in the national accounts.

Suppose a transport company's turnover rises sharply while retail sales volume remains unchanged. Transport revenue might reflect exports, prices or another activity; the two findings do not establish a contradiction. Identify whether the table includes domestic and external activity, and whether the question concerns production or sales. Where an official aggregate exists, interpret it using the compiling agency's definition instead of creating a new total by adding growth rates for sectors of different sizes.

🔄 10. Administrative records and revisions

Administrative records give the index broad coverage but do not make it immune to correction. Declarations, classifications or compilation procedures may change, and adjusted series may be revised as new months are added. Check the metadata and release notes, particularly when comparing years separated by a change in reference year or calculation method.

Keep a record of the activity month, the value first released, the value in the latest downloaded edition, that edition's date and any stated reason for revision. If a hypothetical monthly growth estimate changes from 1.0% to 0.8%, the revision is minus 0.2 percentage points. It is not a cash loss suffered by shops on the day the correction was issued. Use a complete series from one consistent edition for current analysis, and retain the edition available at publication when documenting an older report.

📝 11. Revising a misleading headline

Consider the hypothetical headline “A 30% rise in sales proves consumption has rebounded”. Open the table: is this turnover in value terms or a volume measure? Total trade or retail? Annual or monthly growth? If sales value rose by 30% while volume increased by 3%, explain that value grew much faster than volume without inventing an exact price contribution by directly subtracting the two rates.

If annual volume growth is positive while the adjusted monthly change is negative, report both comparisons. For example: “Sales volume rose from the corresponding month a year earlier but fell from the previous month after adjustment.” Examine which subgroups changed and explain that the picture does not establish higher spending by every household or higher profit at every shop. A sound report answers the question measured by the statistic and uses other sources for income, financing and profitability.

🔎 12. Finding the original document and table

Start with TÜİK's Trade Sales Volume Index release and metadata, selecting the data period needed. Türkiye's national reference metadata for turnover and sales volume explain value, volume, coverage and price adjustment. Open the accompanying tables rather than relying on a search excerpt whose column heading is missing.

For factory sales, check the industrial turnover definition; for services, check the services turnover metadata. These are statistical reference documents prepared by the agency, not reports about a particular shop's results. Compare the methodology's update date with the published series and record any change of reference year. If the interface fails, search the agency's portal by indicator name, then match the period and release identifier before downloading.

❓ 13. Frequently asked questions

Is turnover net profit?
No. It measures sales value under a specified definition. Profit requires revenue, costs, expenses and other relevant financial statement items; an overall sales index cannot establish it.

Should I subtract inflation from sales growth?
Use the published volume index for the official measure. Direct subtraction ignores the way proportional changes combine, as well as differences in product prices, weights and coverage, and may produce a misleading interpretation.

Does volume just mean the number of items?
Not when different products are combined. The measure removes price changes according to its methodology and may use adjusted values rather than a count of identical units. Read the definition before treating volume as an item count.

Does retail growth cover all household spending?
No. Its scope is defined and does not automatically include every service and expense. Use it for part of demand and consult the national accounts when examining broader consumption.

Why can the monthly figure fall while annual growth is positive?
The annual comparison starts from the corresponding month a year earlier; the monthly comparison starts from the preceding month. The level can remain relatively high while the latest movement weakens. Label both comparisons clearly.

Is online shopping always separate from the rest of retail?
Do not assume this from the way an order is placed. Check the classification, coverage, published subgroups and treatment of the business's activity. Avoid adding an online sales figure to a total that may already include it.

Do higher sales prove real wages have increased?
No. The index does not measure buyers' wages or how they fund purchases. That conclusion requires suitable income, price and labour data, and results can differ among households.

✅ 14. A value and volume checklist

  • Identify whether the figure measures sales value, volume or an average invoice.
  • Select retail, wholesale or the other activity that matches the story's question.
  • Record the activity month, release date, index unit and reference year.
  • Separate the adjusted monthly comparison from the annual comparison.
  • Use the official volume index instead of subtracting general inflation from every sales figure.
  • Examine subgroups, weights and product mix changes before explaining the aggregate.
  • Avoid conclusions about profits, household income or a city that the figure does not cover.
  • Retain the edition, original links and revisions affecting the comparison.
