Residence Permit Applications and Renewals in Türkiye 2026: e-İkamet, Documents, Fees and Travel

Applying for residence involves choosing the right application route and demonstrating your actual reason for staying. Completing an online form is one step in the process. It does not mean that a permit has been approved. Follow the instructions generated for your own application and keep its reference, documents and receipts together.

Choose the correct application route

Route	When to consider it
First application — İlk Başvuru	An initial application for a qualifying residence permit. A previous visit to Türkiye does not turn it into a renewal.
Renewal — Uzatma Başvurusu	Extension of a current permit where its qualifying purpose continues and the renewal conditions are met.
Change of category — Geçiş Başvurusu	An application based on a new qualifying purpose of stay. Check the requirements for that category.

An expired card does not create an unrestricted right to renew. Changing an address and changing the legal purpose of residence are different matters. A tenancy agreement or property purchase does not, by itself, guarantee approval.

Check the timing

Renewal applications open 60 days before the current permit expires and must be submitted before expiry. Prepare the passport, insurance and address evidence ahead of that window. If your permit has already expired, contact Migration Management about your actual position; do not change dates or select an inaccurate route to bypass the problem.

Prepare the documents for your category

Document group	What to check

Application record	The signed form, appointment details, generated checklist and applicable payment evidence.
Renewal and UETS	The UETS information form issued by PTT is required for renewal applications and applications made within the additional ten-day penalty period, according to Migration Management guidance.

The general passport rule is validity for at least 60 days beyond the residence period requested. Check the exact dates before selecting a duration.

Some foreign documents need a Turkish translation and legalisation or an apostille, depending on the document and issuing country. Check the applicable list before paying to translate everything. Keep originals and clear copies, and ensure names, birth dates and identity numbers match.

Compare insurance properly

Compare validity, duration, cover and acceptability for residence, as well as price. If another insurance system covers you or an exemption applies, prepare the required proof. Age, student status or family relationship must be considered under the specific rule for your case.

Insurance accepted for a residence application may still have exclusions, limits or treatment costs. A complete residence file does not make every hospital visit free. Read the policy and retain the insurer’s contact details.

Organising documents and an online application

Use the official portal and retain the file reference and receipts. This illustration does not show the e-İkamet interface.

Complete the online application

Open the official e-İkamet portal and choose the correct route.
Enter your name, passport, nationality and entry information exactly as documented.
Provide contact details you actually use and monitor incoming messages.
Select the category, genuine purpose and requested duration; complete the address, insurance and other required fields.
Review the information before submitting. Errors are easier to resolve at this stage than at the appointment.
Save the form, reference, appointment information and document checklist.

An agency’s screenshot does not prove that every step is complete. Know your reference and the contact details registered in your application, and keep access to the documents. The official application and appointment service is free. Residence charges and the card fee are separate, as are any private professional fees; paying an intermediary cannot guarantee approval.

Fees and receipts

Distinguish the residence charge, card fee and any other applicable charge. There is no single total for every nationality, category and duration. Use the official assessment for your file and verify the applicant’s name, identity or application number and payment reference.

Migration guidance lists payment codes 9207 for the residence card, 9233 for the residence charge and 9234 for an applicable visa charge. Confirm the appropriate code rather than guessing. Pay through the official channel offered or instructed, and keep itemised receipts.

Attend the appointment and submit the file

Arrange the form, passport, photographs, address evidence, insurance, purpose-of-stay documents and receipts in checklist order. Confirm the precise office, date and time. Bring originals required for comparison.

If additional documents are requested, record exactly what is missing, how it must be delivered and the deadline in the notice. Review in progress does not mean refusal, but ignoring a completion request can harm the application. Keep evidence of what you supplied and when. Follow your own official application status rather than estimating it from someone else’s experience.

Travel while awaiting the decision

An application printout or appointment confirmation is not an automatic travel authorisation. The relevant route requires a residence application document — İkamet İzni Müracaat Belgesi — approved by Migration Management, together with the applicable fee receipts. The published rule permits return within 15 days of each departure, subject to the document’s validity and conditions. A longer absence brings the normal visa rules into play. Check your position before booking, particularly if a visa or previous permit has expired.

A document generated during renewal may still need the required approval. For a first application, issue of the application document depends on completion of the authority’s procedures. If travel falls before the appointment or the file is incomplete, consult Migration Management or YİMER before buying a non-refundable ticket.

Moving home

Published guidance requires address changes to be notified within 20 working days, with the relevant evidence supplied to Migration Management and the population/address authority as required. Moving within a province and moving to another province can involve different procedures; an interprovincial move may require an application to the new office. A tenancy agreement does not update official records by itself.

If an application is pending, also confirm how to update that file so that notices and the card reach your actual address. Keep evidence of both addresses. Do not register an address where you do not live.

Follow up and avoid misleading promises

Monitor the file and official messages, and keep receipts for additional documents. The official YİMER guidance gives a 90-day assessment period from delivery of complete information and documents, with the applicant informed if processing takes longer; it should not be treated as a guaranteed delivery date for the card. Read any refusal or request immediately.

Migration Management states that it does not work with private intermediaries for these procedures. Warning signs include demands for your e-Devlet password, replacing your email with an agency’s address without your knowledge, guaranteed approval for a fee, or instructions to sign a false address or purpose of stay. Legitimate professional assistance does not guarantee the outcome.

Three practical examples

Your permit is expiring and its purpose continues: prepare the passport, insurance and address evidence, then use the renewal route within the 60-day window and before expiry.
Your reason for staying has changed: check the new category and its documents. Do not repeat the old category merely because it was previously accepted.
You want to travel during the application: check the approved application document, receipts, absence period and re-entry conditions. A reference number alone is insufficient.
