Taşhan combines a historic caravanserai with Erzurum’s well-known Oltu stone market. If you want prayer beads or a piece of jewellery, allow time to compare the shops at a relaxed pace. Focus on the material, craftsmanship and finish: price differences may reflect details that are not obvious at first glance.

This is Rüstem Paşa Kervansarayı in Yakutiye, Erzurum, commonly known as Taşhan. The caravanserai houses the production and sale of Oltu stone goods, including prayer beads, rings and necklaces, for which it is known.
Save the full name together with the city, as caravanserais elsewhere also use the name Taşhan. Start by exploring the courtyard and open shops, then choose two or three places to compare.
Ask what the item is made from, whether it is Oltu stone or another material, and about the workmanship and additional fittings. A dark colour or glossy surface alone does not establish its quality or authenticity; ask for a clear written description when buying an expensive piece.
Handle the beads gently and check their consistency, holes, thread, finish and how comfortably they sit in your hand. Compare the number and size of beads and the fittings: a price comparison without these details can be misleading.

| Purchase | What to check | Before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Prayer beads | Beads, thread and finish | Material and description of fittings |
| Ring | Size and how securely the stone is set | Metal and whether the ring can be resized |
| Necklace or bracelet | Clasp and links | Length and care requirements |
For a gift, choose a design suited to the recipient’s everyday use or interests. Try the size of the prayer beads or the length of the necklace rather than relying on a photograph. Ask for a protective box and pack it separately from heavy belongings.
Ask how to clean and store the item and what to avoid. Do not try improvised tests in the shop that could scratch the stone or damage the metal. For an expensive or bespoke purchase, favour a seller who provides verifiable details and an appropriate receipt.

Spend the first part of your visit browsing, then compare before deciding. Ask permission before photographing a craftsperson or the inside of a shop, and save the seller’s location so you can return or get in touch.
You can combine the caravanserai with Erzurum’s historic sights according to your route from the hotel, leaving a shopping centre for modern essentials. Do not assume every shop keeps the same hours. Call if you are seeking a particular shop or order, and check opening times before arriving late.
