🎓 Double Majors and Minors: Make the Decision with a Study Plan
Check course details, programme plans and binding decisions with the university concerned.

You may want a second field because it complements your degree or a career goal combines two disciplines. Turkish universities offer double majors, ÇAP, and minors, Yandal, but these lead to different outcomes. Before applying, establish the document awarded, additional courses and effect on your workload and timetable. An attractive name is insufficient. The route must fit a clear goal, be available to your admission category and be feasible under your university’s requirements.

Organising documents and an online application

1️⃣ 🎯 Start with the outcome you need

A double major allows students meeting the approved conditions to study two programmes within the institution and obtain separate graduation diplomas. A minor involves a more limited group of courses in another field and leads to a minor certificate, not that field’s graduation diploma. Do not describe a minor as a second bachelor’s degree. Equally, do not choose a double major simply because it sounds stronger: a suitable minor may provide the complementary knowledge you need with a lighter commitment.

Write a practical goal, such as economics knowledge to support political science or computational skills for product design. Determine whether you need the full second programme or a particular area of knowledge. For regulated employment or further study, ask the relevant authority about required documents and courses. Neither route guarantees employment, professional recognition or later admission. Its value depends on what you complete and how it matches the next stage’s requirements.

2️⃣ 📢 Check that the route is actually open

Two departments existing at a university does not mean their combination is open this cycle. Check permitted combinations from your current major, qualification level, teaching language and announced places. Some routes are restricted to particular programmes or student categories and may open in one cycle but not another. Begin with the current notice and regulations. If your major is not listed, seek clarification. A question about a future route is different from a current right to apply.

Application is more than pressing a button. Eligibility review, ranking, results and final registration may be separate stages. Meeting the minimum permits consideration under the rules; it does not guarantee a place. Read preference-ordering rules and the effect of acceptance on other choices. Avoid contradictory applications and assumptions based on an earlier year. Keep the notice for your cycle and identify the office responsible for each stage.

3️⃣ 🛂 What should international students check?

Explain your admission category: were you admitted through the international-student quota or another route? Does the target programme impose additional admission or ranking conditions? Nationality alone does not answer these questions. Regulations may treat admission categories or programmes differently, and universities may require different evidence. Obtain a written answer about eligibility before building a detailed plan for a route you cannot enter.

For a programme in another language, check the required language evidence and deadline. Success in your main programme’s language does not automatically satisfy another route. Review funding implications too. Departmental admission does not oblige a scholarship provider to cover extra courses or time. Separate the questions: eligibility for student affairs, academic planning for the adviser, and coverage for the authorised funding body.

4️⃣ 📋 Read every application condition

Conditions commonly concern progress in the main programme, successful completion of required courses and academic performance, and may include ranking, examinations or language. Treat each as a separate test. One satisfied condition does not cancel the others. Do not rely on a lower figure from an old notice. Ask when eligibility is measured and which record is used; the assessment may differ from your general view of your transcript.

Prepare exactly the documents requested: forms, a current academic record, language or ranking evidence if required, and specified approvals. Check that they reflect your current programme and status. If a grade is missing, ask how it is handled rather than editing a record or expecting automatic completion. Check the application channel, missing-document deadline and final registration date. There is no universal timetable for every university or route.

Possible goalBroad academic preparation in two fieldsFocused knowledge complementing the main field

Key questionCan I complete the whole commitment?Do the courses cover the knowledge I need?

5️⃣ 🧩 Check the curriculum and shared courses

Obtain the curriculum that would apply to you and compare it with your main programme. Identify courses officially counted towards both, courses studied separately and prerequisites. Similar titles are not proof of shared credit, and an unapproved exemption should not form part of the plan. A course accepted for one requirement may not cover every requirement in the other programme. Keep the decisions: assumed credit recognition produces a misleading estimate of time and work.

Watch course sequencing as well as numbers. An extra course may run in one semester and precede a project; delaying it can affect several later steps. Ask whether classes are shared with the other programme’s students and how class or examination clashes are handled. Do not assume a dedicated class or conflict-free schedule. Prepare a main plan and a realistic alternative for an unavailable course. The alternative estimates feasibility, not permission to bypass a requirement.

Preparing an application for study

6️⃣ ⏱️ Assess whether you can sustain the workload

Build a typical week including current attendance, reading and projects, then add the second route’s expected work. Laboratory, studio and group-work commitments cannot be treated like lectures easily replaced by quick reading. Deadlines can converge later in a semester that initially feels manageable. Compare project and examination calendars and identify pressure periods. An extra route is suitable when you can sustain it, rather than survive one busy week at the expense of other learning.

Assess funding for extra courses or an extended period. Do not assume the route is free or a scholarship automatically continues. Ask about your category and additional or summer semesters if relevant. Even without a direct programme fee, extra time may require equipment or services. Obtain a clear answer where continuation depends on funding and establish when to reassess the plan instead of continuing merely because you started.

7️⃣ 💡 A hypothetical design-and-economics example

This example does not represent a university’s regulations. Samer studies industrial design and wants to understand product pricing and consumer behaviour. He finds both a double major and a minor in economics and initially favours the additional diploma. Writing down his goal shows that he wants to understand market decisions within design, rather than build a full independent economics qualification. He requests both course lists and compares outcomes instead of document names.

The double major requires quantitative sequences and projects conflicting with studio work, while the minor covers topics closer to his immediate goal. He checks international-admission eligibility, teaching language and officially shared courses, without treating recognition as confirmed before approval. He also checks funding for any extension. He chooses to apply for the minor while retaining the possibility of deeper study later. A goal requiring full economics preparation would call for a different comparison; this choice cannot be prescribed to everyone.

8️⃣ 📘 After acceptance, track both programmes

Complete registration and confirm that the route and curriculum appear in your record. Meet the responsible adviser and establish how shared courses, remaining requirements and continuation decisions are tracked. A congratulatory message does not prove every step is complete. Maintain a sheet showing each course, the requirement it covers, the recognition decision and expected semester. Review it after every term to detect requirements unavailable when expected.

Read continuation conditions separately from admission conditions. Academic shortfalls or a break in study may change your status under the regulations. If overwhelmed, ask about permitted options before abandoning courses: a lighter load, authorised leave where available, or orderly withdrawal. Ask how completed courses are treated if the additional registration ends and whether a minor certificate is possible under separate requirements. Conversion to a minor is not necessarily automatic, nor do completed courses alone guarantee a certificate.

1️⃣0️⃣ 🗣️ Make good use of your adviser meeting

Bring your goal, course lists and provisional semester plan. Focus on unresolved decisions: difficult sequences, semesters with overlapping work and matters requiring approval before registration. Asking only whether the route is good is too general. It may suit someone with different goals and time. Seek an answer for your case and record what is confirmed, what remains pending and who must answer it.

When speaking with a student on the route, ask about actual work, clashes and curriculum year. Use the experience to frame practical questions, then return to the adviser for matters requiring a decision. A classmate’s experience does not establish a changed rule or your credit entitlement. Fast completion alone also says little about value; ask which skills the combination developed and how it served that student’s goal.

1️⃣1️⃣ 🏁 Separate completion of the main and additional programmes

You may finish your main programme with courses still outstanding in the second. Ask in advance about issuing each document and the time and procedures applicable afterwards. Do not assume success in the second programme permits its diploma independently of the first. Nor should waiting for it be automatic if that affects your next goal. Understand the permitted options and choose suitable timing within them to avoid a final-semester surprise.

Describe your status accurately in professional and academic applications: completed programme, additional programme in progress or completed minor. Relevant courses can demonstrate particular skills, but do not claim a title your documents do not support. If you withdrew after useful learning, describe the completed projects and skills without claiming programme completion. Clear evidence of what you studied and can do is stronger than inflating a title.

1️⃣2️⃣ ✅ Checklist and frequently asked questions

Define the goal and suitable award, then check availability for your admission category, major and qualification level. Read stage, course-success, language and selection conditions. Identify extra courses, prerequisites and potential clashes. Confirm application and final-registration channels, financial policy and continuation, completion and withdrawal rules. Link unanswered questions to the responsible office and base your decision on written answers. If the plan needs ideal conditions every semester, test a realistic alternative before committing.

Can every international student apply?
No blanket assurance is possible. Admission category, target programme and university rules matter; one institution’s rule does not establish another’s.

Does a minor provide a second graduation diploma?
It provides a minor certificate under its requirements, not a diploma from the programme supplying the courses.

Does meeting application conditions guarantee acceptance?
Places, selection and registration procedures can still determine the result. Read the official outcome and complete its steps by the cycle’s deadline.

Can I assume similar courses count towards both routes?
Plan from university-approved recognition decisions. Similar titles or credits alone do not establish that a course covers both requirements.
