Necmi Asfuroğlu Museum in Antakya: Mosaics and Archaeology at Their Discovery Site

When looking for Hatay’s mosaics, distinguish two museums in Antakya. Necmi Asfuroğlu Archaeology Museum presents remains and mosaics preserved where they were discovered; choose the right name and address and confirm access before travelling.

⁦1️⃣⁩ What makes the museum different?

The museum arose after archaeological layers were found during excavation for a hotel project in central Antakya, with the aim of preserving and displaying the remains on site. The Ministry of Culture lists it separately and says it was transferred to the ministry and opened to visitors in 2019.

The layers and mosaics help visitors understand successive uses of the site. Look for the interpretation alongside the remains instead of assuming every panel came from elsewhere. Actual access can change with conservation work.

⁦2️⃣⁩ What can you look for?

The ministry describes Roman floor mosaics preserved in place, including a scene of the winged horse Pegasus and accompanying figures. Consider the floor in its original setting, follow the visitor route and barriers, do not touch the remains and avoid flash where prohibited.

These are examples from the collection, not a guarantee that every piece or area is visible on your visit. Ask the museum which routes and sections are accessible.

⁦3️⃣⁩ Do not confuse the two Hatay museums

Hatay Archaeology Museum in Maşuklu is a different institution from Necmi Asfuroğlu Archaeology Museum in Haraparası. The ministry lists the former as closed for maintenance since 6 February 2023 until work is completed, while the latter has its own visitor-information page.

Do not transfer one museum’s status to the other or treat an old list or published hours alone as proof of actual opening. Confirm with museum management for your date, particularly as conditions can change after the earthquake.

⁦4️⃣⁩ Getting there and tickets

The ministry lists Necmi Asfuroğlu Museum at Haraparası, Süreyya Halefoğlu Street 64, Antakya. Search using “Necmi Asfuroğlu Arkeoloji Müzesi” and check the available entrance and access route before leaving, since surrounding roads can change.

Ask the visitor price, whether your particular pass is accepted, the last entry time and any booking requirement. Do not assume the ticket includes the other Hatay museum or that an earlier season’s price still applies.

⁦5️⃣⁩ A comfortable visit

Allow time for the layers, interpretation panels and a break, then choose a nearby outing after confirming road access and the status of each site. On a busy day make the museum your main stop rather than packing in distant attractions. Ask about interpretation language or a guide if that matters to you.

For families and visitors with limited mobility, check the entrance, gradients, lift, toilets and available route in advance; a photograph alone does not establish accessibility.

⁦6️⃣⁩ Before finalising your plan

Confirm the museum name, entrance, status for your date, accessible remains and sections, entry hours, charges and return transport. Keep an alternative plan in case the route or transport conditions change.

⁦7️⃣⁩ Common questions

Is this the same as Hatay Archaeology Museum?
No. They are separate institutions; check the status and address of each.

Can I see every mosaic?
Not necessarily. Ask which areas are open on your date.

Must I stay at the hotel to visit the museum?
Do not assume either way; confirm independent visitor entry with the museum before going.
