Istanbul’s derbies bring together history, politics, neighbourhood loyalties, identity and an extraordinary passion for football. They are much more than an ordinary fixture in the city’s sporting calendar.

This guide introduces visitors and residents to the leading rivalries and explains how to follow them or experience a match inside the stadium.

1️⃣ What is an Istanbul derby?

A derby is a match between local rivals, typically clubs from the same city. Istanbul’s traditional big three are:
• Galatasaray.
• Fenerbahçe.
• Beşiktaş.

The principal pairings are:
• Galatasaray v Fenerbahçe.
• Galatasaray v Beşiktaş.
• Fenerbahçe v Beşiktaş.

Each has its own history, character and supporter traditions.

2️⃣ Galatasaray v Fenerbahçe: Türkiye’s “El Clásico”

Often regarded as Türkiye’s biggest and most highly charged rivalry, this is the encounter that many supporters consider the country’s most tense football occasion.

What makes it different?

• Europe against Asia within one city: Galatasaray is based on Istanbul’s European side, while Fenerbahçe represents the Asian side.
• A long contest for honours: league championships and Turkish Cups are central to the rivalry, while European achievements are part of the debate too. Galatasaray won both the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 2000.
• The atmosphere: flags, continuous singing and sometimes smoke create an intense setting, with supporters putting considerable pressure on players and officials. The ultras’ sections are unsuitable for someone seeking a quiet matchday.

For visitors:
• Tickets can be scarce, expensive and in very high demand.
• Expect extensive security arrangements before and after the match, particularly around the ground and nearby transport stations.
• If available and suitable under the match’s seating rules, consider a family area or a section intended for neutral spectators. Do not assume that a neutral allocation exists for every derby.

3️⃣ Galatasaray v Beşiktaş: a Bosphorus rivalry

This pairing brings different expressions of Istanbul identity into the spotlight.

• Beşiktaş’s organised supporter culture includes Çarşı, known for social and political slogans as well as its football support. These traditions do not imply that every supporter shares one political position.
• Galatasaray is associated with older institutional traditions, rooted in its origins at Galatasaray High School. Stories about the rivalry sometimes contrast its social background with that of Beşiktaş; neither fan base belongs to a single social class.

Beşiktaş’s stadium stands beside the Bosphorus, giving a home derby a striking waterfront setting alongside a fiercely animated crowd.

Galatasaray–Beşiktaş is sometimes portrayed as having less of a reputation for violence than Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe. That comparison is an impression, rather than a measured safety ranking. The passion is no less intense, and sustained chanting is a central part of the experience.

4️⃣ Fenerbahçe v Beşiktaş: a neighbourhood battle across the Bosphorus

When Fenerbahçe hosts, the focus shifts to Kadıköy on the Asian side. Its supporters see their club as the “king of Kadıköy”, while Beşiktaş crosses from the European side hoping to upset the home team’s authority.

The colourful phrase “Kadıköy neighbourhood war” captures the rivalry’s emotion rather than naming an official competition. It is a sporting contest between two strong neighbourhood identities and two sets of supporters who hate losing this fixture, even when neither club is enjoying a good season.

5️⃣ When are the derbies played, and how can you check the dates?

• In the league, each pairing normally meets twice: once at each club’s home ground.
• Additional meetings may take place in the Turkish Cup or Super Cup.

To follow the dates:
• Check the Turkish league fixture list at the start of the season and subsequent TFF scheduling announcements.
• Consult the clubs’ official websites.
• Use established sports apps such as Sofascore or FotMob as a convenient supplement.

If you are planning an Istanbul trip, you can try to coincide with a derby if you enjoy an intense sporting occasion. Confirm the final date and kick-off time before committing to matchday plans, as schedules can change. If you prefer a quieter visit, avoid the immediate stadium districts around derby time.

6️⃣ Attending a derby: practical advice

1) Tickets
Priority sales often open first to eligible club members, supporter-card holders or particular membership schemes. Any remaining allocation may then go on general sale, subject to that match’s restrictions. Major derbies can sell out quickly. Read the host club’s announcement for the actual order and eligibility rules.

2) Passolig, Passo or the system in use that season
Electronic ticketing links your admission entitlement to your identity. Current club announcements use names such as Passo Taraftar Kart; older information may refer to Passolig. Arrange the required registration and valid ticket sufficiently early, and check the specific club and match requirements. Entry normally requires the applicable electronic-ticket entitlement, but the accepted method may include the app or a permitted temporary pass rather than a physical card alone.

3) Choosing a section
Ultras are often concentrated behind the goals. Expect loud chanting, jumping and flags, and occasionally heightened tension. For a relatively calmer experience, consider a side stand, family area or VIP seating where available. Such labels do not guarantee a particular atmosphere or override the match’s supporter-segregation rules.

4) Arriving and leaving
Avoid taking a private car into the immediate stadium area on derby day. Plan a public-transport route using the metro, tram or Metrobus as appropriate for the particular ground. Leave calmly and stay out of heated arguments or provocative exchanges between rival supporters.

7️⃣ Watching from home

If you cannot attend in person:
• Check the licensed broadcaster in your country; coverage is often part of a paid sports package.
• Use statistics apps to follow the line-ups, chances, cards and analysis.

Make it part of a Turkish evening at home: Turkish tea, appetisers and friends cheering together as though you were in the stands.

8️⃣ Derby coverage on TürkiyeAtlas

The sports and Turkish-football sections could host a dedicated series:

• A pinned guide: “Everything you need to know about Galatasaray v Fenerbahçe”, covering the history of the fixture, its biggest scorelines, finest goals and most memorable incidents.
• A discussion before each derby: members’ predictions, expected line-ups, strengths and weaknesses.
• A discussion after the match: performance analysis, player ratings and first-hand accounts from members who attended, including photographs, stories and practical advice.

That would make the section more than a results service: a lively meeting place for fans of Turkish football, including the Arabic-speaking community the forum serves, following the derby from the planning stage to the final whistle.
