İstanbul Başakşehir represents a modern model in Turkish football: a deliberately developed club project rather than an old institution built on mass popular support. Yet it has won the league and established a place among the country's leading sides.
- Name: İstanbul Başakşehir Futbol Kulübü.
- City: Başakşehir, in north-western Istanbul.
- Established in its current form: 2014, continuing the footballing story of Istanbul's municipal club.
- Colours: Orange and navy blue.
- Stadium: Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium, with a capacity of around 17,000 spectators.
- Başakşehir won its first Süper Lig title in 2019–2020, adding a new name to a competition long dominated by Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş, alongside occasional champions from outside that trio.
- The club has competed in both the Champions League and the Europa League, including the Champions League group stage in 2020–2021.
Başakşehir's traditional supporter base is smaller than those of the major clubs. Its footballing model has instead placed particular emphasis on:
- Organised management.
- Considered recruitment.
- Players with experience of European football.
The stadium is some distance from Istanbul's classic tourist districts, although its location can suit residents of the newer north-western neighbourhoods. A journey may combine the metro with a bus connection, or be made by private car. Check the route and final connection for your starting point and match time.
