Istanbul is vast, and its neighbourhood names can be bewildering at first. Each area has a different pace and character. Choosing a place to stay or live is easier when you start with your own needs, rather than an appealing photograph or an unfamiliar name.
1. Decide what matters most
- Family comfort: a sense of security, nearby services, easy walking and less noise.
- An active social life: cafés, restaurants, nightlife and convenient public transport.
- Quiet and nature: views, walking routes and a less hectic setting.
- Luxury: proximity to the waterfront, fine dining and a high standard of service.
2. Check the practical details before choosing
- Access to the metro or Metrobüs matters. “Close by car” can mean something very different during rush hour. Check the actual journey you expect to make.
- Use 45 minutes as a personal planning benchmark. If most daily journeys take longer than this, consider how the accumulated travel time will affect your week. The right limit depends on your own routine; it is not a universal rule.
- Look for everyday services. A supermarket, pharmacy, cash machine and places to eat nearby may matter more in daily life than the view from the window.
3. Ask yourself three questions
- Will you be out exploring most of the time, or spending much of the day at home or in your accommodation?
- Do you prefer walking and public transport, or expect to rely on taxis?
- Is your budget mainly about value for money, or are you paying for a particular experience?
4. Common mistakes
- Choosing a distant property because it is cheaper, then paying the difference in fares, travel time and frustration.
- Assuming a purely tourist area will suit everyday life: it may be more expensive, noisier and less private.
- Relying on photographs alone. An area can look very different in a listing from how it feels on an ordinary day.
The takeaway
Choose a neighbourhood as carefully as a comfortable pair of shoes: looking good is only part of the decision. It needs to work for the way you actually spend your day.
