1️⃣ Roots After a Change of Address

Moving to a major city or settling somewhere new does not necessarily mean losing touch with the place you came from. In Türkiye, people may retain close ties to their hometown, village or home region after many years in Istanbul, Ankara or Izmir. A change of address need not erase those earlier roots.

2️⃣ Identity and the First Place of Belonging

This connection can involve much more than memories or nostalgia. It may be expressed through family relationships, regular visits, important occasions and the way someone introduces themselves. A person who has lived in a major city for years may still answer “Where are you from?” with the name of their original hometown. Their sense of belonging can include both their present home and the place where their identity first developed.

3️⃣ Family, Visits and Important Occasions

Family often helps sustain the connection. Relatives, old family homes, former neighbours, shared occasions and inherited traditions may remain closely associated with the hometown. Returning for religious holidays, summer breaks, other time off or family circumstances can therefore renew a person’s relationship with their family history and social roots, rather than simply provide a change of scene.

4️⃣ City Opportunities and Hometown Ties

For some people, the major city is where they work, study and find opportunities, while their hometown remains a source of rest, belonging and familiar company. These two attachments can coexist for years: daily practical life centres on the city, while important emotional and social ties continue elsewhere. The balance differs between individuals; it should not be assumed that everyone who moves experiences the same division.

5️⃣ Language, Food and Customs

Local roots can also remain visible in everyday conversation through an accent or dialect, food, customs, pride in a hometown and comparisons between life now and life there. A person’s background may travel with them as a continuing part of their identity, rather than belong only to the past. This helps explain why questions about someone’s home region can carry social meaning beyond their current address.

6️⃣ Fellow-Hometown Connections

These connections can shape new relationships as well as preserve old ones. People from the same hometown or region sometimes get to know one another in a major city or maintain networks based on shared geographical origins. These fellow-hometown connections, often described in Turkish as hemşehrilik, add another source of familiarity and support within urban life. They can sit alongside friendships and connections formed in the new city.

7️⃣ Individuals and Generations

The strength of these attachments varies between people and generations. Some younger city residents identify more strongly with their present way of life and less closely with their family’s place of origin. Others maintain both. Local roots can remain particularly meaningful where family and community ties are central, whereas someone whose life is organised more independently of those ties may experience belonging differently. This is a useful distinction between experiences, rather than a fixed ranking of Türkiye against other societies.

8️⃣ Understanding These Ties as a Visitor

For residents from abroad, understanding these overlapping attachments can help explain return visits to a village or hometown, pride in a home region and the limits of describing someone only by where they now live. Looking exclusively at the major cities can miss relationships that connect urban residents with other parts of the country. For some, social life continues across both their present city and their local roots.

9️⃣ Returning, Memory and Belonging

Returning to a hometown can be more than a habit or a passing feeling of nostalgia. It can be part of how someone understands their place within a family, a landscape and a shared history. Recognising these attachments helps explain how local roots can remain alive alongside urbanisation, mobility and rapid change in Türkiye.
