🛣️ HGS and toll roads in Türkiye with a hire car

You pass a toll point without paying cash or stopping for long, then a charge appears on your rental card days later. To understand it, separate the road toll, the collection method and your agreement with the hire company. This guide helps you check the account, estimate your route, follow up unpaid crossings and review an invoice arriving after you return home.

🏷️ What is HGS?

HGS stands for Hızlı Geçiş Sistemi, the Turkish name for the fast-passage system. An electronic product linked to a vehicle and account collects tolls when it passes. A windscreen sticker does not establish the balance, validity or who manages it. With a hire car, first ask the branch: is there an active account for this number plate, and how are tolls settled under my contract?

The toll pays for passage. The rental company may add an administration charge under the agreement; that is not an official increase in a bridge tariff. If collection fails, an unpaid crossing may need prompt attention. Distinguish it from a speeding or parking fine: each has its own cause, documentation and procedure.

📋 Seven questions before leaving the branch

  1. Is the HGS account active for this plate, and who monitors and tops up the balance?
  2. Do all tolls use this account, or do any services or roads need another arrangement?
  3. When are crossings settled: at return, a few days later or on a subsequent statement?
  4. How is the company's administration charge calculated: a fixed amount, percentage, per crossing or minimum fee?
  5. Does the quoted amount include tax, and what itemised document will I receive?
  6. What should I do if there is an insufficient-balance message or unpaid-crossing slip?
  7. Who handles follow-up after the contract ends and I leave the country?
Record the answers with the contract number and plate. If the company replaces the car, repeat these checks for the new plate and record the handover time. Two statements may need matching to two separate periods of use.

🚗 Toll class is different from a car's marketing category

PTT explains that HGS has six vehicle classes and the product depends on vehicle specifications. Class 1 covers vehicles with a wheelbase below 3.20 metres; Class 2 covers two-axle vehicles with a wheelbase of 3.20 metres or more. Other classes depend on axle count, with a separate motorcycle class. Do not select the class from “family” or “large” in a rental advertisement.

Ask the branch to confirm the account's vehicle class, especially for a minibus or long vehicle. The speed-limit category in the registration document is separate: an HGS class number does not determine driving speed. If the model changes at collection, check the class rather than retaining an estimate made for a different car.

🧭 Identify the route before the price

Write down the road or bridge, entry and exit points, direction and vehicle class. For example, the official Istanbul–İzmir motorway calculator asks for the two points and class. Its result may combine several toll collections along the route rather than one gate charge. Read the explanation so that an included toll is not added twice.

What to recordWhy it affects the estimate
Road and operatorIdentifies the right tariff and enquiry page.
Entry and exitA short section is not the same as the whole motorway.
Vehicle classCar and minibus tolls can differ.
Direction and timeCheck the relevant service's tariff and conditions, particularly for a tunnel.
Return journey and branchesCalculate the actual return separately, then add both journeys.
Start with the official motorway and bridge tariffs, then select the service you will use. Avoid a price image without a date or road name: it may show an older tariff or another class.

🌉 Examples of what to calculate

Crossing between Istanbul's two sides: Identify the bridge or tunnel your route will actually use. “The Asian side” does not give a price: your starting and ending points may lead to different crossings. Check the operator's vehicle restrictions and avoid a last-minute lane change if you discover that the route differs from your plan.

Bursa via Osmangazi Bridge: Use the appropriate calculator for the motorway sections and bridge. Do not automatically add “full motorway price” and “bridge price” if the result already combines them. If leaving before İzmir, enter your actual exit.

A Sapanca trip: Check the route suggested by the app; alternatives may differ in toll and time. Specify the hotel and destination access points, then compare a toll route with a suitable toll-free alternative, accounting for congestion, fuel and stops.

💰 A clear budget without assuming universal prices

The estimate has three layers: operator tolls, rental-company charges, and fuel or extra mileage. Suppose your chosen route costs TRY300 outward, TRY250 back and TRY100 for another crossing. Tolls total TRY650. If a hypothetical contract adds a 10% service charge, that is TRY65, giving TRY715 before any tax on the service required by that contract. These are worked examples, not Türkiye-wide tariffs or a particular company's policy.

A fixed fee per transaction gives a different result. Three service fees of TRY20 total TRY60, giving TRY710 in the same example. Ask whether “transaction” means each crossing or one consolidated invoice. Leave a margin for route changes, while still checking every later charge.

🟠 Check the calculation: Enterprise's published contract is one example of a company adding a service charge to tolls. Use the amount in your own written contract rather than carrying a percentage from one company to another.

⛽ Does avoiding tolls always save money?

Compare the whole journey. If a hypothetical alternative saves TRY200 in tolls but adds 45 km, a car consuming 7 litres per 100 km uses about 3.15 extra litres. Multiply that by the actual fuel price, then consider time, parking and comfort. You need not price every minute, but a tired child or flight deadline can make the time difference significant.

Check the app's “avoid tolls” setting before starting navigation, then inspect the route. It helps with planning but does not replace signs or assessment of suitability for the vehicle and weather. Do not accept a narrow village shortcut simply to save a toll. Consider road quality and your driving experience, particularly at night or in the mountains.

🚦 Approaching a toll point

Read the vehicle and payment-lane signs before entering and slow to the displayed limit. Leave space to stop if the car ahead stops. Some toll points have barriers or staff, so do not treat every road as free-flow passage. Follow local instructions and do not use your phone in the lane.

If the barrier stays down, stop in the designated place and ask for help. Do not reverse or change lanes abruptly. Keep any ticket or slip from the employee; it may show the transaction reference, road and time. Do not remove or modify the sticker at the gate or add a second product to a company car without permission.

📱 If you suspect a toll was not collected

Once safely parked, note the date, approximate time, road, direction and plate. Photograph any slip, send it to the branch and request a balance and transaction-status check. Ask “Has this crossing been paid? I need a payment reference or a resolution before the deadline”, rather than simply “Do I have HGS?”

Use the KGM unpaid-crossing enquiry page or the road operator's official site. A blank result does not prove everything is paid: KGM warns that crossings from the last 15 days may not yet appear. Keep the company's reply and follow up under the operator's instructions.

📅 Payment deadlines: identify the road operator

For roads and bridges it operates, KGM explains that correct payment within the 15 days following the crossing avoids a penalty, with a provision when the final day is a public holiday. An existing account or sticker does not remove the need to follow up a failed collection.

The page also explains escalation after the grace period and gives separate information for other operators. Do not assume the same penalty applies on every road or wait until the last day. Ask the rental company to resolve the incident promptly, establish who will pay, and obtain actual confirmation. Coordinate any direct payment with the company first to avoid paying again after an automatic account deduction.

🔐 Use the correct payment channel and keep the receipt

Open the official website by typing its address or using a saved operator link. Confirm the plate, amount and transaction reference before payment. A message using the HGS name does not establish its sender's legitimacy. With a rental car, you do not need the company's account password or a new account in your own name without an agreed arrangement.

If you pay after coordination, retain the receipt and reference, send them to the branch and ask for them to be recorded against the contract. Check that the particular crossing later shows as paid. For a second debit, ask to match both references rather than assuming separate expenses. Do not load a large balance into an account whose owner or refund arrangements you do not know.

🧾 Settlement when returning the car

Request a statement showing recorded crossings, those still being processed and when a further claim is expected. Ask whether the company will charge the card later or issue an invoice first. Settle known rental costs, but keep the toll file until all crossings appear.

What to requestWhat to check
Plate and contract numberThe claim concerns the car you collected.
Crossing date, time and roadIt falls within your period of use and known route.
Operator tollMatches the class, entry and exit where required.
Service charge and taxShown separately from the toll and consistent with the contract.
Payment statusDistinguishes money already collected from an outstanding request.

↩️ Follow-up continues after you return home

A notice may arrive a week or more after return, depending on data processing and company settlement. Compare the crossing date, not just the card-debit date. A debit after departure may concern an earlier crossing; the plate, contract period and supporting document matter.

For example, if you returned the car at 10:00 but are charged for a 14:00 crossing that day, send the time-stamped return report and request correction. Ask for details if the statement lacks them. If cars, classes or contracts changed, arrange them chronologically to match each amount to its proper file.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A simple family file for a road day

Have someone other than the driver keep notes and receipts. Prepare the route, alternative and stops, and agree arrival parking with the hotel. For the airport return, review the route that morning and allow for refuelling, vehicle return and transfer to the departure terminal.

Keep a photograph of the plate, the contract and branch-assistance number on your phone. Add brief notes such as “Monday, … Bridge, outward” rather than trying to remember every road a month later. There is no need to photograph gates while driving. Safely recorded notes, the official statement and return report form a useful review file.

❓ HGS questions

Does a sticker mean the roads are free?
No. It is a collection method; charges still depend on the road and contract.

Should I buy my own sticker for a hire car?
Arrange this with the owner first and check the existing account before adding another product.

Does no recorded violation prove payment?
No. Data can be delayed. Request the transaction status and follow up.

Is the company's service charge an official fine?
Separate the operator's toll and any penalty from the company's contractual service charge.

Are outward and return tolls always equal?
Calculate the actual return route, class and service separately.

🔎 Two situations to review calmly

Situation 1: a statement exceeds your estimate. Suppose you expected TRY600 and receive a TRY760 statement. Separate tolls, service charges and tax instead of disputing only the total. You may have entered farther along the road or used an extra section after navigation rerouted you. Request dates and road sections, then match the service clause to the contract. Keep the explanation if the calculation is clear; otherwise ask about the specific unexplained line.

Situation 2: a claim after direct payment. You have a TRY300 receipt for a crossing, and the company includes the same crossing in its invoice. Send the transaction reference, plate, date and receipt, and request removal of the duplicate or clarification that it concerns another crossing. A separate contractual service charge may still apply, so ask the basis for every amount. A bank screenshot without a recipient or reference is insufficient for matching a toll accurately.

In either case, prepare one small file: contract number, statement, receipts, question and requested resolution. Record who replied and when. If escalation is necessary, use the company's, operator's or bank's formal complaint route appropriate to the issue, retaining original documents.
