Choosing a Hospital and Doctor in Türkiye: Licensing, Experience and Follow-up

1️⃣ 📌 No hospital is the best at everything

One may have a strong cancer service, another particular expertise in cardiology, neurology or orthopaedics. Ask which hospital and team suit your condition and proposed procedure. Consider specialty, team experience, facilities, follow-up and financial cover.

2️⃣ Establish your clinical needs

Clarify:
🔹 Current diagnosis.
🔹 Required specialty.
🔹 Need for a second opinion.
🔹 Whether surgery is needed.
🔹 Complexity or rarity.
🔹 Need for a multidisciplinary team.
🔹 Long-term follow-up.

If the diagnosis is unclear, start with a reliable specialist assessment rather than immediately seeking an operation.

3️⃣ Choose the appropriate hospital type

Public hospital: often suitable for general care and SGK patients; larger hospitals offer advanced specialties.
Training and research or city hospital: may suit cases needing several specialties and extensive facilities.
State university hospital: may offer expertise in complex and rare conditions and academic second opinions.
Foundation university hospital: may offer academic expertise, with charging closer to private care.
Private hospital: often offers earlier appointments and more doctor choice, usually at higher cost.

4️⃣ Check official authorisation

For ordinary resident care, verify the facility's identity, legal name and branch. For treatment from abroad or through an intermediary, check:
✅ The facility's international health-tourism authorisation.
✅ The intermediary's authorisation.
✅ The legal name matches the contract.
✅ The branch address matches.
✅ Payment goes to the facility or properly identified authorised organisation.

The Ministry updated the authorised-facility lists on 5 October 2026. Check the current official list and exact branch before booking, and verify an intermediary separately where one is involved.

5️⃣ Check the doctor and team

Review:
🔹 Recognised specialty.
🔹 Qualifications and academic position.
🔹 Current hospital appointment.
🔹 Experience with the particular procedure.
🔹 Assisting team.
🔹 Anaesthetic and intensive-care support.
🔹 Postoperative follow-up arrangements.

Request the doctor's full name in Turkish and check the hospital's official information and available Ministry services. Ask the facility or provincial health directorate if credentials remain unclear; online databases may require authentication or have access limits. Followers and advertising do not establish clinical competence.

6️⃣ Ask about experience with your condition

Code:
Bu ameliyatı yılda yaklaşık kaç kez yapıyorsunuz?
Alternatif tedaviler nelerdir?
Takibi hangi doktor yapacak?
🔹 Approximately how many of these operations do you perform each year?
🔹 What are the treatment alternatives?
🔹 Which doctor will manage follow-up?

Ask for benefits, risks and alternatives. A responsible doctor cannot promise a 100% guaranteed outcome.

7️⃣ Check how complications would be managed

For major surgery, ask about:
✅ Intensive care.
✅ Blood bank or blood-supply arrangements.
✅ Supporting specialties.
✅ Round-the-clock emergency and imaging services.
✅ Transfer plans if a service is unavailable.
✅ Contact after discharge.
✅ Prompt reassessment by the doctor.

An impressive building does not establish adequate clinical support.

8️⃣ Check insurance and cost

Before planned treatment, establish:
🔹 SGK contract status where relevant.
🔹 Exact branch and doctor's private-insurance network status.
🔹 Consultation price.
🔹 Additional charges.
🔹 Surgical quotation.
🔹 Excluded implants.
🔹 Extra admission-day costs.
🔹 Cancellation terms.

“We work with all insurers” does not confirm your own policy.

9️⃣ Read online reviews critically

Reviews may help assess:
✅ Booking.
✅ Waiting times.
✅ Reception.
✅ Cleanliness.
✅ Billing clarity.
✅ Interpreting.

They cannot alone establish:
❌ Diagnostic accuracy.
❌ Surgical competence.
❌ Suitability of treatment.
❌ Complication rates.
❌ Whether an operation is clinically needed.

Some are promotional; others concern hospitality rather than clinical outcomes.

1️⃣0️⃣ Consider a second opinion

A second opinion can be useful for:
🔹 Major surgery.
🔹 A cancer diagnosis.
🔹 Joint replacement.
🔹 Spinal surgery.
🔹 Cardiac or neurological surgery.
🔹 Conflicting medical opinions.
🔹 Expensive proposed treatment.

Give the second clinician original reports and images, rather than only a verbal account.

1️⃣1️⃣ Assess follow-up

Before treatment, ask:
✅ How many follow-up visits are included?
✅ Are they in person or remote?
✅ Who removes stitches?
✅ Who responds to new symptoms?
✅ Can you obtain an English report?
✅ How should you send results after returning home?
✅ Can a doctor in your home country continue care?

Treatment continues beyond discharge.

1️⃣2️⃣ 🚩 Warning signs

❌ An intermediary withholding its legal identity.
❌ Payment to a personal account.
❌ Guaranteed clinical results.
❌ Pressure to pay immediately.
❌ Refusal of a written quotation.
❌ Concealing the doctor's name until arrival.
❌ Using a hospital name without clear contractual arrangements.
❌ An unusually low price without implant or admission details.
❌ Changing the doctor or branch after payment.
❌ Refusing an invoice or medical report.

1️⃣3️⃣ 📋 Final checklist

✅ Written diagnosis.
✅ Named doctor and specialty.
✅ Hospital and branch.
✅ Health-tourism authorisation where applicable.
✅ Detailed quotation.
✅ Required insurance approval.
✅ Treatment plan.
✅ Explanation of risks and alternatives.
✅ Cancellation terms.
✅ Follow-up plan.

1️⃣4️⃣ ✅ Key points

Choose a facility with an appropriate clinical team, complication-management facilities, clear authorisation, written costs and practical follow-up. Compare the clinical plan and team before room appearance or brand reputation.
