Car Ferries in Türkiye: Choosing the Route, Ticket, Boarding and Return
A ferry can be a convenient way to cross a strait or reach an island, but not every sailing carries cars and a vehicle ticket does not necessarily include every passenger. Plan both directions around the operator, vehicle and travel date.
Choose the terminal and service
Search for the departure and arrival terminals, not just the city, and confirm the chosen sailing accepts vehicles. Terminal names can be similar and some services carry passengers only. Check operating days, journey time and cancellation announcements with the operator before leaving.
For example, İDO distinguishes its fast ferries carrying vehicles and passengers from its passenger-only sea buses. This describes its services, not every vessel or route.
Check the vehicle class and price
Enter the vehicle type, dimensions and attachments accurately, including any trailer or rear box. Classes for cars, buses, motorcycles and large vehicles vary by operator and route; ask the operator if classification is unclear.
Establish whether the driver or passengers are included or need separate tickets, and check the total price, taxes and any fees. Compare an alternative route using fuel, tolls and time as well as the ferry fare.
Booking and registration plate
Read the sales rules for each direction: must you buy in advance, is online purchase available, or is boarding by queue? Booking and capacity can vary seasonally and between the outward and return legs. Save the confirmation, time and terminal.
GESTAŞ states that its vehicle ticket is tied to the registration plate and plate changes follow its rules. A rental car’s plate may be unknown until collection; ask the operator and rental branch about the process before buying a ticket that does not match the vehicle. Do not assume the same change rules across operators.
Prepare passengers and boarding
Ask about the latest arrival time and vehicle check-in procedure; allow time for queues, traffic and finding the correct quay. The last time to buy a ticket can differ from the time your car must be ready to board.
Prepare the vehicle papers, licence and ticket confirmation. Follow staff instructions on passengers, luggage and the entry and exit lanes. If someone needs mobility assistance, ask in advance about terminal access, boarding and the services available on the vessel.
Plan the return and changes
Check the return separately: terminal, direction, sales method and available time. Weather or operations may change sailings; keep a suitable waiting or alternative route plan and leave a margin before a flight or accommodation check-in.
Before paying, read the rules for changing or cancelling and what happens if the operator cancels or you arrive late. Ask through an official channel; do not assume an automatic refund or alternative sailing in every case.
Rental cars and islands
Check the rental agreement with the company before taking the car on a ferry or to an island. Request confirmation of destination, cover, assistance, towing and restrictions, especially when returning in another city. A ferry booking does not itself change the rental agreement.
Plan an island itinerary that includes fuel or charging, parking and time back to the terminal. Travelling without a car may be sufficient if local transport suits your plans.
Practical example
A family with a hire car plans an island visit. They confirm that the outward service accepts the vehicle, then check its class, plate, passenger count and total price. They review the return method for their date, keep the confirmation, ask when to arrive and plan an alternative if weather affects the sailing.
Common questions
Does every ferry take cars?
No. Check the vessel, route and availability for your vehicle class.
Does the car ticket include the whole family?
That varies by operator and product. Check passenger details and the total before paying.
Is the return booked in the same way as the outward trip?
Not necessarily. Sales or queue arrangements can vary by route, season and direction.
