Beşiktaş JK is one of Türkiye’s oldest and most established clubs. It is closely associated with its striking stadium setting beside the Bosphorus and with Çarşı, the supporter group known for its memorable slogans.
• Full name: Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü.
• Founded: 1903, making it one of Türkiye’s oldest clubs.
• City: Istanbul, rooted in the Beşiktaş district on the Bosphorus.
• Club colours: Black and white.
• Home ground: Tüpraş Stadyumu, formerly Vodafone Park, with a capacity of around 40,000 spectators.
Beşiktaş has won numerous Turkish league titles, Turkish Cups and domestic Super Cups. It has also competed in the Champions League and Europa League, reaching the later stages in some seasons.
Its league title total is lower than those of Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, but many supporters see Beşiktaş as “the people’s club”. For them, its distinctive identity matters as much as the number of trophies.
The ground stands beside the Bosphorus waterfront, close to Dolmabahçe Palace. Its location is a major part of its appeal and makes it a particularly memorable stadium to visit.
Before a match, you can:
• Walk along the Bosphorus waterfront.
• Visit Dolmabahçe Palace, if its opening arrangements fit your schedule.
• Continue the short distance to the stadium.
Inside the ground, expect passion, coordinated chanting and calls passed between different stands, with Çarşı playing a prominent part in the atmosphere.
Çarşı’s identity extends beyond supporting the team. Members have been associated with:
• Social and political slogans.
• Humanitarian and community initiatives.
• Demonstrations and other public events.
These activities are part of the group’s history; they do not mean that every Beşiktaş supporter shares one political outlook or that Çarşı’s views represent the club’s official position.
At matches, its slogans, songs and distinctive chants are an important part of the sound of the stands.
For visitors:
A Beşiktaş match can feel like a football fixture and a lively expression of local supporter culture at the same time.
Beşiktaş has major derby rivalries with both Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. Each has its own character:
• Against Galatasaray: A contest shaped by the clubs’ identities and their shared city.
• Against Fenerbahçe: A rivalry between Beşiktaş’s Bosphorus neighbourhood and Kadıköy on Istanbul’s Asian side.
TürkiyeAtlas could develop its Beşiktaş coverage through:
• A pinned introduction to the club’s history and Çarşı supporters.
• A matchday guide covering the walk from Taksim to the stadium.
• Match discussion threads: predictions and possible line-ups before kick-off, followed by analysis and members’ accounts of attending the game afterwards.
• “Famous Çarşı slogans and what they mean”.
• “The stadium beside the Bosphorus: members’ photographs and matchday reports”.
• “Choosing seats at Beşiktaş’s stadium: advice for visitors and families”.
