The main building of Baksı Museum in rural Bayburt.
Bayburt's cultural sights extend beyond its castle. Baksı Museum, the Kenan Yavuz Ethnography Museum and the underground site at Aydıntepe each offer a different perspective, from contemporary art to rural life and archaeological heritage.
Artist Hüsamettin Koçan founded Baksı Museum in countryside overlooking the Çoruh Valley. The project brings contemporary art together with traditional crafts, connecting artistic production with its local setting.
Its importance lies partly in that meeting of ideas and partly in its location outside the city. Village life and the surrounding landscape become part of the relationship between art and place.
The Kenan Yavuz Ethnography Museum focuses on rural memory and local ways of life. Buildings and displays associated with homes, work, tools and crafts help visitors imagine how village life was organised.
Objects are presented alongside architecture and the functions of different spaces. Together they show how knowledge, habits and traditions pass between generations.
Part of the Kenan Yavuz Ethnography Museum site in Bayburt.
Aydıntepe contains passages and chambers cut into rock below ground. Its form raises questions about earlier uses, and interpretations of its identity and function vary.
Distinguish the visible archaeological features from hypotheses about them. Unresolved accounts should not be presented as settled historical facts.
These sites connect contemporary creativity, the heritage of everyday life and archaeology. The museums show how crafts, tools and architecture preserve Bayburt's memory, while the underground site adds an earlier layer to its settlement history.
Together they complement the castle and historic centre, presenting a varied cultural picture of the province.
Confirm current access before setting out, including whether the underground site is open. Rain, fog and upland conditions can affect routes, while buildings and facilities may close seasonally or for maintenance.
Respect private homes and village properties, follow authorised paths and help protect each site and its surrounding environment.
