Bursa is far more than a convenient excursion from Istanbul or a winter destination at the foot of Uludağ. It is one of the Marmara Region's most varied provinces, bringing together Ottoman heritage, historic markets, traditional villages, mountains, forests, lakes and coast.

It suits first-time visitors to Türkiye, families, and anyone interested in history or nature. Spend a day in the historic centre, or allow several days for destinations further afield, including Uludağ, Mudanya, Tirilye and İznik.

This is the starting guide to Bursa province. Its major destinations are covered in greater depth in separate guides.

📍 Where is Bursa?

Bursa lies in the south-eastern Marmara Region, south of the Sea of Marmara and Istanbul. Its position connects Istanbul, Yalova, Balıkesir and Bilecik with western Anatolia.

It helps to distinguish between:

Bursa city: the large urban area centred mainly on Osmangazi, Yıldırım and Nilüfer.

Bursa province: a much wider area that includes coastal, rural and mountain districts such as Mudanya, İznik, İnegöl, Karacabey and Orhangazi.

A visit to Bursa can therefore mean a few hours in the old centre or several days travelling through very different landscapes.

🕌 1. Bursa's historic heart

For a first visit, start in historic Osmangazi. Many of the principal monuments and markets are close together, so much of the area can be explored on foot rather than by driving between individual sights.

Bursa Ulu Cami — the Grand Mosque

One of Bursa's defining religious and historic landmarks, the mosque stands in the heart of the old commercial district. Its early Ottoman architecture, spacious interior and extensive calligraphy make it a rewarding visit. Its central location is also an excellent starting point for Koza Han and the surrounding markets and caravanserais.

🧵 2. Koza Han

A short walk from the Grand Mosque, Koza Han is among Bursa's best-known historic caravanserais. Completed in the late fifteenth century, it was associated for centuries with the silk trade, a major part of the city's economy.

Its two-storey building surrounds an inner courtyard, and it remains a place of commerce. Sitting in the courtyard over tea or coffee is a simple pleasure that complements a walk through the old markets.

🛍️ 3. The inns and bazaar district

The Grand Mosque and Koza Han belong to a wider historic commercial landscape. Other stops include:

• Koza Han.
• Emir Han.
• Fidan Han.
• The Covered Bazaar.
• The surrounding historic markets.
• Cumhuriyet Caddesi and nearby old passageways.

If you enjoy traditional shopping or architectural photography, allow several hours rather than rushing through.

🏰 4. Tophane

Tophane occupies higher ground above parts of the historic centre and is one of Bursa's best-known viewpoints. The area includes the clock tower, the tombs of Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi, parts of the historic citadel, and gardens and open spaces for walking or sitting.

It works well towards the end of a historic walking tour or around sunset.

🟢 5. The Green Mosque and Green Tomb

Yeşil Cami and Yeşil Türbe form one of Bursa's most recognisable architectural ensembles. Ottoman tiles and decoration, particularly their turquoise and green tones, give the complex its distinctive character.

Combine them with Emir Sultan and Irgandı Bridge for a broader historic route east of the city centre.

🌉 6. Irgandı Bridge

Some visitors overlook this bridge despite its proximity to the historic district. Shops and commercial premises stand on the bridge itself, making it an interesting stop when moving between the city's older neighbourhoods.

It can be included in a walk between Yeşil and central Osmangazi.

🏘️ 7. Cumalıkızık

For a different side of Bursa, Cumalıkızık is a strong choice. On Uludağ's northern foothills, it preserves a particularly fine example of an early Ottoman village.

It is known for traditional houses, narrow stone lanes, small markets, local produce, rural restaurants and breakfasts, and opportunities for walking and photography.

The village forms part of the Bursa and Cumalıkızık World Heritage property, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014.

⏰ Visiting tip

Arrive early, particularly at weekends and in busy seasons. The lanes are narrow and become crowded later in the day.

🏔️ 8. Uludağ

Bursa is closely associated with Uludağ, but the mountain is not solely a winter destination.

❄️ Winter

Uludağ is known for skiing, snow, mountain hotels and winter activities.

🌿 Spring and summer

Its forests, walking areas and cooler mountain air offer a change from the heat of the cities. The ascent is part of the experience, particularly on the Bursa cable car.

The separate Uludağ guide covers access, the cable car, accommodation areas, winter and summer visits, and practical advice.

🌊 9. Mudanya

If central Bursa represents history and Uludağ the mountains, Mudanya represents the province's maritime side. On the Sea of Marmara, it offers a waterfront promenade, restaurants, cafés, historic houses and a coastal atmosphere.

It combines readily with Tirilye and suits a relaxed half-day or full day away from central Bursa's traffic.

🏘️ 10. Tirilye

This small historic coastal town near Mudanya has a quieter atmosphere, old lanes and buildings, and views over the Sea of Marmara.

A practical combination is Mudanya and Tirilye in one day. Their separate guide provides the detail.

🌊 11. İznik

İznik is a destination in its own right rather than simply a nearby suburb of Bursa. On the shores of Lake İznik, it combines nature with ancient walls and gates, Byzantine and Ottoman monuments, the historic Hagia Sophia, İznik ceramics and tiles, and a lakeside setting.

It also has a dedicated guide within the south-eastern Marmara series.

🌳 12. Other natural attractions in Bursa province

With more than two days available, consider places beyond the usual tourist circuit:

💧 Suuçtu Waterfall

A well-known nature destination in Mustafakemalpaşa district, visited for its waterfall and forest surroundings.

🌅 Gölyazı

A village on Lake Uluabat, with a rural landscape, waterside setting and a quieter atmosphere.

🌳 İnkaya's historic plane tree

A familiar stop on the road towards Uludağ that can be combined with a mountain outing.

🍽️ What to eat in Bursa

Food deserves a place in a Bursa itinerary.

🥩 İskender kebap

Bursa's signature dish is typically served with bread, tomato sauce, butter and yoghurt.

🍬 Kestane şekeri

Candied chestnuts are one of the city's best-known local specialities.

🥟 İnegöl köfte

The celebrated meatballs associated with İnegöl district.

🍳 Country breakfasts

Particularly associated with Cumalıkızık and the surrounding villages.

🚇 Getting around Bursa

Central districts have a public transport network of BursaRay rail services, trams and buses. Outlying destinations such as Mudanya, Tirilye, İznik and some waterfalls and villages need more planning because they are not a short distance from the city centre.

🚶 The historic centre

Walking is an excellent option because many sights are close together.

🚗 Further afield

A car offers greater flexibility, particularly when combining several destinations in a day. Check the current BURULAŞ routes and timetables if travelling by public transport.

🗓️ How many days do you need?

One day

Focus on the Grand Mosque → Koza Han and the bazaars → Tophane → Yeşil. If time allows, substitute Cumalıkızık for part of this route rather than adding everything.

Two days

Day 1: historic central Bursa.
Day 2: Uludağ, or Cumalıkızık and Uludağ if transport and timing allow.

Three days

Add Mudanya and Tirilye.

Four days or more

Add İznik, Gölyazı or more distant nature destinations.

🌤️ When to visit

Bursa can be visited throughout the year, but the experience changes with the season.

SeasonWhat to expect
🌸 SpringGardens, villages, nature and generally mild conditions
☀️ SummerCoast, villages, high ground and Uludağ
🍂 AutumnWalking, historic sights and seasonal landscapes
❄️ WinterUludağ, snow and winter tourism, subject to conditions

For walking around the historic city without a particular interest in snow, spring and autumn are generally comfortable choices.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Is Bursa suitable for families?

Yes. A single trip can include nature, historic buildings, the cable car, traditional villages, coast and lakes, markets, restaurants and local experiences.

Avoid trying to cover Bursa city, Uludağ, Mudanya and İznik in one day. The province is extensive, and an overloaded itinerary can turn the visit into constant travelling.

✅ Who will enjoy Bursa?

It is particularly rewarding for visitors seeking Ottoman history, old bazaars and caravanserais, mountains and nature, family outings, historic villages, a destination relatively close to Istanbul, or variety between city, countryside and coast.

For a very short stay, prioritise historic central Bursa and choose just one additional destination to suit your interests: Uludağ, Cumalıkızık or Mudanya.

🎯 Planning your visit

Bursa's strength is its variety. One day can take you through Ottoman mosques and caravanserais; another can take you up Uludağ, along Mudanya's coast or among İznik's monuments.

Use this guide as a starting point. The dedicated guides in the south-eastern Marmara series explore each principal destination in more detail, helping you build an itinerary around the time available and your interests.
