Bilecik connects Marmara with Anatolia and sits between Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa and Eskişehir. Its importance comes from its position within road, rail and industrial networks. In 2026, Osmaneli gained attention as work progressed on the Bursa–Yenişehir–Osmaneli railway.
Bilecik already has high-speed trains
The new project is not bringing high-speed rail to Bilecik for the first time. The province already has Bilecik and Bozüyük stations on the Ankara–Istanbul line, shown in TCDD Taşımacılık’s high-speed services. The new element is Bursa’s connection to the existing network at Osmaneli, linking its industrial corridor with the Ankara–Istanbul route.
Progress on Osmaneli–Bursa
On 28 July 2026, the transport ministry said work on the approximately 106 km Osmaneli–Bursa section was in its final stages and preparations for testing were under way.Preparing for tests is not the start of commercial service. Systems, signalling, power and safety must be tested, followed by certification and handover. Announced dates should not be treated as guaranteed opening dates.
The section belongs to the approximately 201 km Bandırma–Bursa–Yenişehir–Osmaneli project. Design-capacity figures such as 30 million passengers and 59 million tonnes of freight annually concern the completed corridor; they do not predict immediate traffic after opening.
Another improvement between Bozüyük and Bilecik
Work also continues on the Ankara–Istanbul line’s T26 tunnel. A June 2026 ministry update explained that it would bypass a slower conventional section and reduce the Bozüyük–Bilecik journey to around nine minutes after completion, easing constraints affecting passenger and freight trains.
Why rail matters to local industry
Bilecik’s production base includes:- Ceramics and building materials.
- Marble and natural stone.
- Metals, foundry work and machinery.
- Agricultural and food processing.
- Cement and refractory products.
- Vehicle components and intermediate goods.
Rail can support workers, visitors and market access. Freight benefits depend on terminals, connecting tracks, warehouses and operating costs, rather than simple proximity to the line.
What could change in Osmaneli?
- A stronger role connecting Bursa with the Ankara–Istanbul line.
- More demand for services, maintenance and transport.
- Businesses seeking access to Bursa and Eskişehir.
- Housing demand from workers if local services improve.
- Short-stay tourism linked to history and nature.
Conclusion
Bilecik is an established high-speed rail node whose role could strengthen through Bursa’s connection at Osmaneli and improvements to the Bozüyük–Bilecik route. Real opportunities lie in integrating rail with industry, services, training and logistics, rather than assuming land prices will rise.- Bilecik: Early Ottoman History and a Quieter Side of Marmara
