Visitors may know Yalova for its springs and quiet hotels, but the province is also an important centre for shipbuilding and marine engineering. The contrast between Termal and Armutlu’s visitor economy and Altınova’s shipyards explains much of its employment, housing and transport activity.

♨️ Termal: water and nature tourism

Termal’s springs lie approximately 12 km from central Yalova, in a green valley on the Samanlı foothills. The provincial culture and tourism directorate identifies Termal and Armutlu among Türkiye’s priority thermal-tourism springs and describes the public Termal facilities as covering approximately 104 hectares.

The visitor experience includes:
  • Hotels and spa resorts.
  • Historic baths.
  • Forests and walking routes.
  • The historic tree-lined approach.
  • Access from Istanbul by sea and road.
  • Potential for winter as well as summer tourism.
In 2025, preparation of a Yalova Tourism Master Plan was accepted under the Eastern Marmara Development Agency’s technical-support programme. This was a planning step, not confirmation that the completed plan had been fully implemented.

Distinguish thermal relaxation from medical treatment. Mineral waters may form part of supervised health or rehabilitation programmes, but claims about treating a particular disease require licensed healthcare provision and medical oversight.

⚓ Altınova: ships and marine engineering

Shipyards on the province’s eastern side build and repair vessels and manufacture marine components and systems. The sector supports:
  • Marine engineering and design.
  • Welding, metalwork and electrical trades.
  • Logistics and transport.
  • Suppliers and maintenance businesses.
  • Vocational training, housing and everyday services.
  • Exports and specialised-vessel contracts.
Official visits on 28 August 2026 to Gürdesan and Tersan discussed engineering, production and current projects, alongside skilled jobs, exports and green-energy investment.

These point towards greater specialisation and efficiency, while occupational safety, energy, industrial waste and lorry traffic remain important challenges.

🔄 How the two sectors connect

  • Workers and engineers generate demand for homes, hotels and restaurants.
  • Professional visitors support year-round business tourism.
  • Transport and service firms benefit from both maritime and visitor activity.
  • Vocational training can create opportunities for local young people.
  • Ferries and roads link Yalova with Istanbul, Kocaeli and Bursa markets.
Industrial expansion needs to respect coastal, air and water quality. A strong maritime economy requires waste treatment, energy efficiency, emergency planning and emissions monitoring.

🧭 Which part of Yalova fits your needs?

  • Relaxation and visitor accommodation: Termal and Armutlu.
  • Maritime and industrial jobs: Altınova and areas near the shipyards.
  • Everyday services and ferries: Central Yalova.
  • Industrial commuting: Calculate staff-bus times and congestion, not just map distance.
  • Tourism businesses: Check permissions, water, wastewater and seasonality.
  • Industrial businesses: Assess supply chains, energy, safety and skilled staff.

✅ Conclusion

Yalova combines thermal tourism with a maritime economy. Termal provides a spa and nature identity; Altınova contributes engineering jobs, industrial production and exports. Growth through the rest of the decade needs to protect the coast and avoid excessive pressure on housing, water and infrastructure.
