This suggested week combines selected cities, history, nature, the coast and regional food. It suits first-time visitors, families and couples who want several stops rather than a week in one city. It is an active itinerary: intercity transfers take time, and fewer stops may make a more relaxed holiday.
When to go
Spring and autumn often offer a useful balance of weather and visitor numbers. Summer suits islands and the coast but can be busier. Winter works for historic centres, cafés and thermal bathing, though weather can disrupt sea travel. Check conditions and holiday dates when choosing your travel week. Before setting out
Do not try to cover all eleven provinces in a week. Four or five well-chosen stops are more rewarding than a rushed list. Istanbul is a convenient arrival and departure base. Book the main transfers, check the actual journey times and allow overnight stays near the next day’s activities.Day 1: a first look at Istanbul
- Morning: Sultanahmet and a gentle walk through the historic area.
- Midday: choose the Grand Bazaar or Spice Bazaar.
- Afternoon: Eminönü or Karaköy for coffee and something sweet.
- Evening: dinner and a walk in Taksim or Şişli if you have the energy.
Day 2: another side of Istanbul
Choose one route: the Princes’ Islands if conditions are suitable; a short Bosphorus cruise and Ortaköy; or Kadıköy and Moda on the Asian side. Avoid trying to combine all three.Day 3: Bursa, Ottoman heritage and nature
Travel by a suitable ferry to the Bursa coast followed by a local connection, or take an intercity coach from Istanbul. Check the actual operating routes and return or onward arrangements.- Morning: Bursa’s historic centre and old markets, if your arrival time allows.
- Midday/afternoon: the Uludağ cable car and a viewpoint, subject to weather, service and queues.
- Later: thermal bathing or a green walking area if time remains.
Day 4: Yalova, thermal bathing or a rest day
From Bursa, plan an overland connection to Yalova. If you are based in Istanbul instead, check an appropriate ferry service; do not assume a direct Bursa–Yalova passenger ferry is available. Visit the thermal area in the morning, then take a waterfront walk and stop at a café. If bathing is not for you, use the day to rest before the longer transfer towards Çanakkale.Day 5: Çanakkale, history and the sea
Allow a substantial transfer from Yalova and consider arriving the previous evening. Start with a museum or the waterfront if time permits. Later choose either Troy for archaeology or a shorter coastal outing with seafood. End with a promenade walk. Troy is outside the city; budget for the journey and visitor hours. Avoid treating this as a full sightseeing day if you also have a long morning transfer.Day 6: Edirne, a day of Ottoman history
Plan the Çanakkale–Edirne journey in advance, including any coach change; a direct service must be confirmed. Alternatively, return to Istanbul and make Edirne a separate coach trip, adding time or dropping another stop if necessary. When you arrive, visit Selimiye Mosque under the current access arrangements, explore the centre and markets, try local food, and add nearby sights as time allows. An overnight stay avoids a rushed arrival and departure.Day 7: return to Istanbul and keep it flexible
Allow for the journey from Edirne. Use the remaining time for gifts, a market, a café or an experience you missed. Keep time to pack and, if flying, reach the airport. This should be a buffer day rather than another packed programme.Budget styles
- Budget: public transport, local food and modest accommodation.
- Mid-range: varied restaurants, a couple of paid activities and a comfortable hotel.
- Higher budget: licensed private tours or transfers, selected restaurants and central hotels.
Getting around
Public transport is useful for many Istanbul visits. Intercity coaches and suitable ferries can connect the wider trip, but timetables and weather matter. Plan the main transfers and keep the daily detail flexible. Check BUDO sailings and Istanbul island ferries directly.Mistakes to avoid and ways to adapt
Do not overload Istanbul, change city merely to tick a box, leave no delay margin or rely on taxis for everything. Families may prefer more time in Bursa or Yalova and fewer city changes. History enthusiasts can extend Edirne and Troy; nature enthusiasts can give Bursa more time and plan Sakarya/Sapanca as a separate addition. Adjust activities and spending for your group rather than treating the times as fixed bookings.Related guides
